I've seen some movies lately, and if I were less lazy about it, I'd write some real reviews. Instead, have some mini-reviews... (Not very spoilery, but putting them beyond cuts just in case.)
(I just have a low tolerance for whiny brats with emo angst, at least if I get the feeling we're meant to take them seriously; on the other hand, if I come to find him amusing, I may warm to him yet -- that's what happened with Draco Malfoy.) Hah, finally someone who agrees with me! *g*
*g* I should have quoted more, as I mainly meant Kylo Ren; I seem to be the only one who finds him annoying for the very same reasons. But it's definitely true also for Draco, even though I became fonder of him through a close friend shipping HP/DM..
Maybe it was just that I didn't expect to love it, since I didn't love the book? But then again, sometimes works of art click with us and sometimes they don't, and that's all right.
Out of curiosity, was there anything specific you didn't like about it or was it more of a "meh" reaction?
You know, you had the same reaction my partner did--she'd read the book, didn't enjoy it especially, and then was pleasantly surprised by the film.
I'm not sure why I didn't like it. I loved the visuals (of course!) but just didn't sense a lot of the joy of a crush. The whole thing seemed a bit calculating. YMMV, of course! M.
Short version: Son of Saul is very good, if upsetting; I recommend watching it if you can.
Longer version: it's perhaps the most unflinching portrayal of the Holocaust I've seen -- there's no music, the only soundtrack is the noise of the camp (shouts and screams and gunfire), there's no flinching away from the horrors of naked, bloody bodies, but no dwelling on them either. The main character searches to do something that's meaningful to him but not to anyone else, given the horrors they're living every day and the lack of worth a human life has in the camp, and it's just -- really thought-provoking and horrifying. I think that if I were a history teacher and wanted to show my students a movie about the Holocaust, I'd pick this one.

It's Kylo/Hux from the POV of Hux's cat, and I think you'd enjoy it too. *g*
