1) The great Victor Hugo fascination of 2013 continues -- I've been obsessively listening to the Notre-Dame de Paris musical for the last few weeks, because omg, it's so good. Just listen to this song.

I also read Claude Gueux, a short story from 1834 which foreshadows a lot of the themes of Les Misérables while contrasting it in interesting ways

Eg var i utgangspunktet oppglødd fordi Tomas Alfredson skal regissere og John Ajvide Lindqvist skriv manuset, og Låt den rätte komma in er så bra -- og som du seier, dagens spesialeffektar gir rom for superskummel!Katla -- men... meh. Det følest som om dei prioriterer kommersielle omsyn først og fremst, og det gir meg ikkje høge forventningar. :-/

Tomas Alfredsson och John Ajvide Lindqvist båda är väldigt bra på vad de gör, men i detta fall får det mig inte direkt att känna mig mycket bättre? Förutom att filmen ska vara på engelska (*Shudder*) så är de båda regissörer främst förknippade med seriös drama/skräck, och ser man hur de flesta mainstream filmer med fantasy-inslag har gjorts de senaste tio-tolv åren så följer de en väldigt specifik utformning (med andra ord: de försöker vara Sagan om Ringen) som jag personligen inte tycker passar berättelsen. Om man ser på hur t ex Narniaböckerna adapterades, som tematiskt har flera saker gemensamt med Bröderna Lejonhjärta, inger det mig inte mycket hopp.

Jag antar att vad jag oroar mig är att de kommer göra en grimdark!version av boken; något som säkert är frestande därför att boken är mörk. Den tar upp seriösa teman som döden, förtryck, totalitära regimer och svek. Men vi ser allt detta genom ett barns perspektiv för barn, och vad boken handlar om är hur dessa saker besegras (

Ja -- eller kanskje endå meir ei generell actionfilm-utforming med tanke på plott og konflikt etc.? Til og med LotR var pressa inn i den formelen utan at boka høyrer heime der. Når det er sagt, kan sikkert Alfredson og Lindqvist kome opp med lure og kreative ting -- men ja, det er ein temmeleg høg risiko for OMG GRIMDARK.

Filmen kan mycket väl vara en bra film; jag oroar mig mest för att den inte kommer att vara Bröderna Lejonhjärta längre.

Ja, det er slik eg føler det. Og sjølv om eg heilt sikkert kjem til å sjå filmen, tvilar eg på at det vert min personlege Alfredson-favoritt. :-/

Oh my gosh, I LOVE Notre-Dame, musically. The original cast was sooooo good. Not so good at acting, and the staging was kind of wtf late 90s/early 2000s French spectacle, but the music, gosh. It even has a Victor Hugo digression in song form!

I really want someone to do a non-replica staging of it preferably Budapesti Operettszínház but the Hungarian production already fell through. It could stand a better English translation, too.

I know! (Though I do like Bruno Pelletier's acting, at least compared to most of the others'.)

So who would Szabó be in an Operettszínház staging? *g* Frollo?

Yes, Pelletier is the best actor in the lot! A lot of the others are just...really stiff (but so nice to listen to). Garou is okay, too, iirc. Have you watched the whole thing yet?

(Yes. And I in fact have an mp3 of Belle with him singing Frollo--and probably camping it up, judging by audience giggles--from back when there were attempts at a Hungarian production, haha, and lo, my id did explode.)

You're an LM Montgomery fan? So am I! I'll have to look into that story. I just finished reading Emily's Quest recently (for the third or fourth time). Never spent a lot of time in the LMM fandom. It didn't seem to have much representation.

I loved the Emily books as a kid -- reread them several times, especially the first one. I read the Anne books as well, but only once; for whatever reason they didn't grab me the way Emily did. (Maybe it was the supernatural stuff?)

I've only read the Anne and Emily books, I think; a lot of LMM's work seems to be on Project Gutenberg so I should probably check out more of it. Another thing I liked about the Emily books was that despite her imagination and her talent, and her need to write, she always has to work on becoming better at it -- it's not as if everyone falls over with praise every time she shows them a poem. I do have a fondness for her early writings, though, spelling mistakes and all.

I should start my Narnia story right away, if only so I can procrastinate on it by finishing some of my other stuff, heh.

Oh, it's a beautiful story which always provides me with a cathartic cry (or several) -- but, well, there's lots of death and also instances of suicide, just so you know. :-/
