I very rarely go to the theater, and usually the thing that gets me there is a festival or some kind of special promotion - like a fringe festival, or the free night of theater - something that makes me sit down and actually look at what's showing.

so you would be more drawn in by an occasional promotion than an ongoing deal? for example: Arena offers $10 tickets to patrons age 30 and under every week beginning each monday for that week. if you didn't already know that, would that make it more interesting to you? or, is it less intriguing if it's a constant arrangement?

I think for me it's better if it's not a constant arrangement, because I'm unlikely to be a person who goes to the theater consistently. So it's something that's out of the ordinary that makes me really look at what's playing and decide if I'm interested in going to it.

Generally I do because the story intrigues me. Mixtures, I like to see older works. New plays tend to be too cinematic, every playwrite wants to write a film on stage.

I prefer to see productions I've had little to do with, as I can see the virtues or poor points without the baggage.

that's interesting about new plays. also, most people i know who work in theatre feel the same, in that they'd rather go to see something they've had nothing to do with producing.
