Not done with it yet, but so far, sort of dredgy and depressing. With that one really jarringly funny part about the guy that had the "apron of a stomach". Which, obviously, stands out in my mind, but doesn't really fit with the rest of the prose.
Um. No winningly endearing characters that I actually like yet.
Hhmm...I really am starting to question my own state of mind - I didn't really find it so much depressing as realistic, with uplifting bits. But then, I don't like people much and she skewers them gloriously :)
I think it's funny that I was not enthusiastic about reading this book at all, but I'm one of the first of my friends to finish it. To be honest, I nearly gave up on it because it starts so slowly, but I'm glad I didn't because I ended up enjoying it. It was really sad and I didn't always like some of the characters but I'm glad I read it and I found myself thinking about it long after I'd finished.
I re-read it almost immediately, despite the sadness. I actually thought it was very Rowling but that doesn't seem to be a common opinion so I might be projecting a bit :)

I might be the only person who really liked it and thought it was *very* Rowling-ish.
