Exactly. And now, we'll have to see if down the road the HP series will turn into the HP Universe, ala Star Wars, for other writers to play in (with the creator's permission). That could be very cool.
I dunno if she'd ever let go enough to let other people write in her universe. Thought I'd love to see good HP verse stuff. Especially other parts of the Wizarding World.
Yeah... I dunno, I mean, she has put up with Harry Potter fandom for all these years... novelists over whose work she would have total power of veto seems pretty spiffy by comparison. XD I dunno if it'll happen, certainly not immediately, but... I do feel that eventually, either she'll go back and write more, or other writers will be allowed to come in and play in her sandbox. I just have that feeling.
Exactly! I was hoping for a real 'house unity' ending, but it would up being 'Griffinpuffclaw' unity instead. XP Kinda disappointing. Esepcially because I just inherently rebel against the idea that a person's character is truly decided at the age of fucking ELEVEN. Please.
Yeah... you're right, there's no real way to resolve the house elf story in an anti-slavery way, because she established them as a 'willing slave race', which is a phrase that I just can't swallow, no matter how I try.
Well, certainly in the case of Tonks and Fleur, as soon as they got married, they became very much removed from the action, which bothered me quite a bit. It's not so much the baby thing, even, especially since JKR has come out and said that Hermione's a working mum. It's more the recurring theme of "RESPECT THE NUCLEAR FAMILY", that the only good way for a character to end up is married, with kids. You never see any other kind of family portrayed in a positive light. No divorcees, no single mums or dads,
( ... )
Based upon interviews with JKR I've seen and read, it seems to me that based on her personal experiences (raised by single mom, divorcee with kids) she has very strong feelings towards family ties. Just one look at Voldemort and what he represents as a villain really expresses how much she values family. So what the whole deal with the emphasis on the nuclear family thing is it's probably her making this aspect of the Harry Potter story a bit of a personal fairy tale for her, especially with the ending. If you look hard enough there are examples of non-nuclear families (Neville was raised by his grandmother, Dean or Seamus , I forget, was raised by a single mom, Sirius went to live with James' family after running away from home), but they are definitely glossed over. I am sort of curious how deliberate it was on her part.
Yeah... and I definitely agree that family is extremely important. Kids need to be loved growing up, there's no doubt about that. But often the books seem to cross the line from "Family is good" to "One particular kind of family is good", and that just kind of bothered me. There are all kinds of families, and plenty of good kids come out of non-standard familes... and plenty of standard nuclear families produce some pretty messed-up kids, so.
I think it's Dean who was raised by a single mom, now that I think of it. Seamus's dad is never mentioned, as I recall, though we do see his mom at the World Cup.
*nod* That theory makes a lot of sense, and I think, realistically, that could well be what happened... I just wish it had gotten more of mention. Especially since the books seem to have been building towards a big house unity thing, and it just kinda... didn't deliver, in the end. XP
I have to agree that I just did NOT believe that all the Slytherins got up to leave when given the choice between fighting and leaving. Pureblood and ambitious and sly does NOT equal amoral or bad or cowardly or incapable of being pissed off at Voldemort for being a violent psychopath (and even his supporters had to see that he was that way. I mean, the man tortured people (purebloods, even) who failed him. This is not a sign of a benevolent and just ruler). I just didn't believe that part, really, and I wish that the Slytherins had had some good guys besides Snape (who didn't show up for most of the book and didn't really get to DO anything on camera except die) and Draco, who drug his feet but never really threw in with the good guys.
Right. I wish there had been more examples of non evil Slytherins... as well as examples of evil non-Slytherins. Peter Pettigrew is the only example of a non-Syltherin Death Eater I can think of -- and even then we don't actually know his house; we can only assume it was Gryffindor because that's the house James and Sirius and presumably Remus were in. (For a while I had a theory that each of the Marauders was form a different house, but that's another story.)

Have missed miss_arel and her arts, but mostly her. ^_^
All the pot holes associated with HP aside, I agree. Book seven worked, and really that's all I really wanted.
