So, that was an adventure (or, why I'm pretty sure Panorama needs better signs)

So, I'm skiing. In the mountains. For the first time. And, for the most part, the weather is gorgeous (though, regrettably, there's no fresh snow), it's been beautiful, I've got enough warm clothes, and I 'was' doing well enough on the runs we did yesterday. And then, there's this blue run. Which was.... 'fast' but okay, for the most part (for ( Read more... )

Honey, you should be taking lessons.

The lessons I took while in the mountains have proven to be the most effective lessons I've ever taken. It had me ballerina-dropping down a powdery black diamond at Marmot this year.

I'm sorry to hear you hurt yourself -- hot tubs are nice. (And the ski patrol doesn't mind giving people tows down if you haven't "actually" hurt yourself...)

I'm feeling better now- and the lessons were a godsend. Turns out, I was bending and straightening my legs on turns (or, at least, trying to) backwards. Cutest little old lady (who's retired, and lives out here in the winter). Michael took one too. Instructor took him up on Founder's Ridge, and taught him to ski moguls. He's excited. We're actually hoping to get back up there tomorrow... because I found what can only be a cat track snaking through there which is probably a 'doable' blue, so he can practice, and I can ski 'with' him without killing myself. That and head up to the summit for hot chocolate. Plus, night skiing.

I didn't want to bother the ski patrol, because it literally took me less than two minutes to get over to the base of the lift.... I saw a toboggan getting dragged to someone today though. (at least, I assume you don't tow toboggans down the mountain for fun...)

Are you talking about the end part of the run "Heaven Can Wait" or "Little Dipper" and missing the "Boomerang" and "Detour" detours?

I have some history with coming down those runs and missing the detours . . .

That's the run.... skiied Boomerang today, and it wasn't bad.... but there's been so much sun that that tight little corner iced up - I was fine, but it was cutting closer than I'd like.

Yeah, I remember it being icy too at the turn. I think sometimes there was so little snow (I guess snow machines don't get in there) that there were patches of snow there.

I realized over time that the going the direct and steep way really isn't as bad as it looks, at least when there's snow (if it's icy, it's hard). I think it's mostly psychological fear of the steep incline that makes it difficult.

No, when you're expecting something steeper, it isn't too bad. I actually did go that way yesterday, and it was doable. But, that said, it wasn't icy, and the snow was a little bit soft. I think... Monday, I just wasn't expecting it, and didn't realise I should probably stop, and choose a way down. What with the lack of signs. (Which, by the by, also nearly got me lost in Founder's Ridge yesterday. I like cat track skiing. I don't think I'm ready for black terrain skiing. Not being able to tell the difference is... a problem.)
