The Universe: Owen's Story - part five

Owen sat nervously on the bed. All the historical figures had been sent for medical examination. He wasn’t sure how he felt about being called a ‘historical figure’ but he was sure that he didn’t want a medical examination. He told been told to take his shirt off and wait for the Doctor, but he hadn’t. Instead he sat in his curtained cubical trying his best to think of ways to get Toshiko and him out of their current situation. The curtain twitched, ‘kick him in the balls and run away’ flashed through his mind as plans went it was the stupidest that Owen had come up with thus far.

The curtain was swept back and Red stepped through it. He gave Owen that grin that his old Captain would give him, the one that said ‘everything is fine’ when inside the Captain was screaming. He sat next to Owen, they sat side by side in silence for a short while until Red said, “please don’t rat him out, he’ll be executed or worse for this kind of breach”

“What’s worse then death?” Owen asked. Red looked worried and Owen was curious as to what could freak out the Captain.

“Memory wipe…I think I could find a way to cope with him dying, but him not even remembering me or that I love him that would be unbearable.”
If Owen were alive he would have felt physically sick. He could understand Jack’s relationship with Ianto, he knew Ianto’s good qualities and could see why Jack fell for him. Well once Toshiko explained them to him he could. But Hart was this young version of Jack being serious? How could he fall for an underhanded, liar whom revealed in chaos and cruelty? If that was the kind of person that Red was prepared to love, Owen didn’t think he would be able to trust this man.

“I don’t know, I’d be quite happy to have him wiped from my memory” Owen said coldly. Red looked at him, his expression was blank and gave nothing away.

“Clearly your something else, the gas couldn’t knock you out and didn’t even leave a mark on your memory” he said calmly. “So there would be no point in hurting you, I don’t think you’d feel it. But if you don’t keep your mouth shut about JR then I will torture Miss Sato until she prays for death” he smiled one of his bright smiles. After what he had just told Owen it was freighting.

“You might think that you have me over a barrel, but trust me you don’t, I’ll keep my mouth shut if you get Tosh and I out of here before any medical examinations” Owen wore his best poker face and hoped to god it was enough to fool Red.

Red stared back at him, with those blue eyes that had once held sympathy for Owen, now held nothing but contempt. “You have yourself a deal Doctor” Red said calmly.

Ten minutes later Owen, Toshiko and Red were heading down a corridor towards what Owen hoped would be their freedom. Toshiko clung to his hand as if it were a life preserver.

Owen was great full for the contact; it was one of the things he missed about life simple human contact. Gwen flinched when her hand brushed his; the icy-ness of his flesh was too much for her. Jack didn’t flinch, he’d been around and seen too much, but he blamed himself for Owen’s condition and couldn’t look him in the eye anymore.

Ianto didn’t flinch, but he didn’t touch or talk to him much either. Not that Owen wanted him too, but he missed the stupid jokes Ianto sometimes made when he handed him a cup of coffee. Or the touch that sometimes happened when Owen took that cup from Ianto. It was weird that he missed the little things; he missed them more than the sex, the little moments that built up the relationship before it got to sex. Tosh wasn’t like that, she still held his hand and made jokes, but that made it worse because now he could see how great she was and these little moments weren’t going to lead anywhere, they couldn’t he was inactive in that department.

They turned left into a corridor that had escape pods at the end of it, there were signs telling him as much dotted along the corridor. “Here’s the plan,” whispered Red.

“Let me guess,” said Owen slowly, “we get in the escape pod and you…”

“Launch us into space” Toshiko finished for him. “Great plan genius, how is that meant to get us back to earth?” Tosh’s voice was laced with sarcasm.

“It will lock on to the nearest plant with an breathable atmosphere” Red bit back.

“And that’s earth is it?” Owen asked.

“That wasn’t part of our deal Doctor, you wanted to go free it’s not my fault that you failed to specify when or where” Red hit open an escape pod and pushed Owen inside. He threw Toshiko in on top of him and ejected the pod into space. Owen was on his feet and banging on the door as the pod moved away from the space station. Owen screamed at Red he could see his face grinning at him from the space station’s window through the porthole in the pod’s door.

“There’s no point screaming Owen, we’re in space where no one can hear you scream.” Said Toshiko.

“FUCK” screamed Owen. He needed to release his rage, he needed to kick something but one kick could do irreversible damage. So he sat down and rubbed his rips. Ever since that bar fight with Tosh’s ex -boyfriend they kept popping out at the most exasperating of times.

“Just try and stay calm, we’ll get out of this…we just need to stay calm and think of something.”

“What if we don’t think of something?”

“Not possible you’re a genius and I’m brilliant, plus we’re both Torchwood. No crappy alien escape pod is going to fool us.”

After some considerable conversation they decided that the best thing to was wait, until the pod landed to make their next move. There was nothing they could do while flowing in the stars with no tools or way of manipulating the pod into changing course. All they had to do was wait…

Twelve days pasted without event. There was no sign of a plant with a breathable atmosphere things were looking bleak. Tosh lay on the bench in the tiny escape pod she was staving and dehydrated. Red had pushed them into a pod that had no supplies in it what so ever. Owen lay on the floor; their ‘do nothing’ plan (if it could even be called a plan) wasn’t working. But no matter how much he thought about it Owen couldn’t come up with a way of getting them out of there.

It had been almost two weeks since he put Tosh’s life and his death in Red’s hands and got double-crossed. Their little pod tumbled through space apparently not meeting any plants suitable for them. Owen had spent days with his nose pressed against the window staring out at all the nothing-ness that the universe contained. How could he have ever hoped that there would be a plant that could cure him? There was nothing out there, it was worse than the dark.

At least with the dark there was the knowledge that everyone he had loved was still out there living in a better place, but out there flowing in space… it made it hard to believe everyone he knew and cared for were living better lives.

Jack had disappeared, okay he said his baby was safe but he was doomed to raise her alone. Ianto had been sentenced to death in the cruellest manner, stuck on the Titanic knowing his fate was at worse to drown or freeze to death. At best to live alone in early twentieth century New York and Gwen well Owen wasn’t even sure that Gwen was alive. The last time he saw her she was bleeding from the head and laying on the floor of the hub.

Suddenly and completely without warning the tiny escape pod started to shake violently. Tosh sat bolt up right, “what’s going on?” she shrieked.

“I don’t know” Owen yelled back at her. He jumped to his face and pressed his nose against the ting porthole window. Their pod had locked onto a plant with a breathable atmosphere and the pod was breaking up on entry through its o-zone layer. There was nothing that Owen and Tosh could strap them selves into. Instead they clung together in fear as the tiny pod broke up around them, as it hurtled to the ground thousands of feet below them.
