At first he has absolutely no interest in John Grimm.

Sure they look eerily similar, but there are subtle differences, shifts in face shape, hair length, and facial expressions. John is leaner, hungrier, his eyes large and haunted in a face that is wary to the extreme. He knows his own face to reflect any emotions that he feels, but John is closed off. The similarities aren’t enough to make him curious about this strange man Jim found in a bar.

Jim however appeared to be fascinated by the close resemblance, blue eyes flicking between them whenever they were in the same room, wearing an expression like a kid who had been given two blocks of chocolate when he only asked for one.

Then slowly things started to change.

John Grimm had been brought onto the ship, given the rank of Lieutenant, posted as a security officer. Spock had almost lost his eyebrow to his hairline when Jim announced it to the senior crew. It had been most irregular, but Jim said, in a tone of voice that belied any questions, that Starfleet had been informed and indeed approved of his actions.

It was rare that McCoy and Spock were on the same wavelength, rare that they banded together, but this was one such time.

Quietly they ran checks, searches, perused databases and scoured the computer banks for any information on a John Grimm.

The only notable person with the name had lived over two centuries ago, a soldier who had survived the Olduvai disaster in the year 2046. Spock had immediately discarded the information, believing it to be irrelevant to their current investigation.

But Leonard kept the articles, for some reason reading them over and over again.

He did background searches on the marine, John “Reaper” Grimm, hearing of his parent’s death in the same facility he had become famous for fighting in. He learnt of the twin sister, Samantha Grimm, a scientist who had become famous after the Olduvai Disaster, a strong moral voice in the field of science.

He found that she died at age 95 in her home in California. But he found nothing on Grimm after Olduvai.

Not even a death date.

So he watched John Grimm closely, engaged him in light conversation, got to know the man behind the red security uniform.

He found out that Grimm had a wry sense of humour, a sharp wit, and was incredibly intelligent. He found out that the man was gruff but under it all there was a kind of softness, a sensitivity that was rather endearing. It made him feel warm inside that Grimm came to trust him enough to reveal the softer side.

And then he discovered it. The immortality.

After that he suddenly knew everything, told everything by John “Reaper” Grimm, whose dark eyes fixed on him with determination. He knew about the C-24, about the superhuman abilities, about the monsters and the truth about the Olduvai disaster.

He kept it to himself.

Spock was a scientist, a logical thinker. The C-24 might prove to be too much of a temptation for him, the knowledge, the power, the potential good of it. Might be enough for him to believe it outweighed the bad, which it didn’t.

They spent more and more time together, McCoy and Grimm until one night, during the Enterprise Christmas Party of all things, when both of them were relaxed with a little bit of alcohol, John kissed him.

Everything was as it should be, Leonard thought dazedly, as the immortal man claimed him, with that animal passion he had only caught glimpses of before.

And as they tumbled together into his bed, Leonard catches a glimpse of them in the mirror, seeing the similarities, but mostly he sees the differences.

Because he is Leonard McCoy and John is John Grimm. They may look eerily similar, but they will never be the same.
