You're Fragile And I Am Too
From the moment they beam up, it seems like some alien has messed around with time. Everyone’s moving in slow motion, the sounds of the world seem muted around him. The only thing that seems real is the weight in his arms, and the hot wet drip of blood down onto his skin.
They try to take him away, but he fights to cling to the man in his arms. He thinks he’s shouting but the sound still hasn’t been fixed. He thinks it’s Spock who tells them to let him carry his burden at top speed to the medbay, but that’s not important. What’s important is the feeling of the shuddering breath gusting against his neck, the proof that he’s alive.
He puts his precious burden down on the biobed, and then blue shirts are rushing around him, a concerned blonde face looking up at him and then he’s been pushed out of the room, the doors sliding closed in front of his face.
Now he has to wait, crumpled on the floor, head resting on his arms, mind running through everything that had happened, everything that had not happened. Now he had the time to dwell on his failings, on his mistakes, on everything that had led to his best friend laying on a biobed, bleeding to death.
He’s aware of Spock standing nearby, looking serene, hands clasped behind his back. He’s motionless, face expressionless, except for the faintest of lines between his eyebrows and the lack of an arch in his eyebrows.
Scotty and Sulu are leaning against a wall nearby, both with drinks in hand. He doesn’t have the heart to chide them, right now they’re all off duty, the entire ship seems to be waiting, holding its breath.
Chekov is pacing, furious, active little steps that take him up and down, and up and down, and up and down again. The boy does it so often that he half wonders why there isn’t a trench in the smooth floor. It’s a clock for him, watching the Navigator’s steps brush to and fro. The seconds that seem so warped are no longer a trustworthy compass for time, but those steps...those steps tell him that time is truly passing.
The only ones that are missing are Uhura, who is in charge of the Bridge, waiting as anxiously as they for news, Christine who is inside the medbay, and him..
It seems forever before the doors open and M’benga is there, looking worn and tired, with bloody hands and shirt. And he is on his feet, feeling Spock move to stand by his shoulder, feeling Scotty and Sulu move closer and Chekov coming to a standstill beside him.
“He’ll live.”
He thinks he might have fallen if Spock’s hand wasn’t suddenly there under his elbow. Sound is still sketchy, but he thinks he hears a sigh of relief from the Vulcan, followed by relieved chatter from Scotty and Sulu and an excited whoop from Chekov. He thinks he hears the young Navigator contact the Bridge and Uhura, but he isn’t sure because he’s entering the medbay, suddenly empty of everyone except the figure on the bed.
He hesitates, halfway there.
And then the hazel green eyes open slightly, and a warm smile curls up the lips tiredly.
“Jim.” Bones says quietly, and sound comes flooding back, and time resumes it’s normal course.
“Bones,” He says, moving to sit beside his best friend and lover’s bed, “You scared me old man.”
“Takes more than that to kill me Jim.” Bones chuckles breathlessly, and then those eyes sharpen, “Haven’t you been checked out yet? You know it’s reckless not to get injuries seen to at once. Dammit Jim.”
He just grins and kisses him quiet.
And the world is right once more.
