Ambitious Choices
Golden eyes gleam in the gloom of the Observation deck. He is waiting, waiting for the perfect moment to strike, and he’s sure he is about to have his opportunity. The Captain seems to regularly come up here on this night of the week, always to look out at the stars, or maybe admire the intense darkness.
Tonight he is ready, ready to put an end to the cruel reign of James Tiberius Kirk and rise through the ranks as was his due. No one else is willing to be so bold, well he is. He is ready, and he will take his opportunities rather than being a weak cowardly nothing down in the cesspool of the Junior Officer ranks.
The doors opens and Kirk walks in, not looking around, just walking straight up to the platform where the stars stream by. The lights silhouette him, framing his form with soft silver light, lighting up that famous golden hair, like the stars are dusted in the strands.
And Pavel Chekov hesitates, halfway across the floor.
For the first time he questions his decision, questions the sensibility of killing Kirk. If he does…he will paste a target on his own back. If he succeeds then Spock will be Captain…and Spock will not favour him after the death of Kirk. And besides, Kirk may be cruel but he has always treated Chekov with no less respect than anyone else on his Bridge…
Slowly Chekov slides his knife back into his boot and moves up to stand beside the still form of the Captain. Kirk doesn’t look at him, but Pavel sees a small smile warming the usually cold mouth. And he realizes that Kirk knew he was there the whole time, and was waiting to see what he would do. It almost annoys him, the arrogance of the man, but it also makes him glad that he has chosen the right path.
Together the two stand, watching the stars go by.
