Notes about Break-up

OMG! just heard that Vivian broke up with you. Y?

not true. I broke up with her. rly, you should check your source and don’t believe everything they say. who told you?

basically, Vivian shouted it across the hall this morning - to clarify that she ended it, not you

sounds typical, yes.

but y?! everyone is shocked. Y?!?!?!

she sucked.

well, I don’t suppose that was the problem *shakes head* or are you one of those guys who don’t like blowjobs?

I can’t believe we’re having a conversation over my preferences in bed during math class

not having a conversation, just note-passing

you know what I meant

course I do. again: Y break up with Vivian? am I allowed to call her a bitch now? omg, don’t tell me she cheated?!

no, she didn’t. how about going to Avalon after class and grabbing some ice cream? I’ll tell you there

sure.

“Merlin?”

Merlin turned around to see Gwen standing in front of him. “Hey you.”

“Have you heard yet? Arthur and Vivian - ”

“Broke up. Yes, I know. Actually I’m on my way to Avalon to - ”

“Oh my God, is it so bad that he needs ice cream to get over it?”

Merlin hadn’t thought of it that way so far. But Arthur hadn’t seemed very depressed during class the whole day.

“Oh stop it, Gwen. It’s summer and it’s far too hot, ice cream is the only cure. Besides, we’re talking about Arthur. Nothing breaks him and makes him cry.” Merlin knew this was a lie. He remembered a ten year old Arthur lying in the arms of a ten year old Merlin, crying his heart out because he had found a photograph of his dead mother and Uther had yelled at him that Arthur shouldn’t have found it and wasn’t allowed to ask any questions.

“Alright, I’ll see you tomorrow then.”

“Yes, Gwen. Bye.”

**°°**

“Do you want to eat it here or should we sit down in the park?”

“Here, air conditioning is vital at the moment.”

Merlin agreed and they sat down at a little table, facing each other. They both ordered their ice cream - Arthur different sorts of fruity ice cream and Merlin chocolate with chocolate and a lot of cream. While they were waiting for the cool distraction from the overly high temperatures, they talked a bit about their subjects, marks and finally about classmates.

“Erm so... about Vivian...”

“Yeah...” Arthur frowned and looked down into his cup. Maybe he was sad. Merlin wasn’t sure whether to drop the subject or to ask Arthur further questions.

“If you don’t want to talk about it...”

“Don’t be ridiculous, Merlin. I’m not some girl who’s not able to talk about her feelings because of heartbreak or something.”

“No, you’re Arthur - you never talk about your feelings to anyone. Oh no, did you say you were heartbroken? Because I don’t know how to deal with a heartbroken Arthur. If you were Gwen or Freya, I’d force you to eat lots and lots of chocolate and ice cream and watch horror films with me. But you, you would hate all of that and - ”

“For heaven’s sake stop it, Merlin. I broke up with her, I wanted it to end.”

“Oh, right. I forgot that. So, you broke her heart and we’re happy about that? Or did she do something unforgivable?”

“Why am I talking to you about this again?”

“Because we’re best mates and I’m one of the few people who put up with you. You can’t tell your football mates because they’re not interested in anything that’s connected to feelings and you can’t tell the girls because then you’d think they weren’t taking you for a ‘real man’ - whatever that is.”

“Yeah, thanks for clearing that up.”

“No problem. Again: why?”

“Well, there was this party on Friday, the one everyone’s talking about - although most of us were so wasted that I can’t understand how they can remember the details... Anyway, the party at Morgause’s that you weren’t attending.” At this Arthur glared at Merlin as if whatever bad thing had happened had been because of Merlin’s absence.

“It was uncle Gaius’ birthday, Arthur. There really wasn’t a choice for me.”

“Yeah well, at said party we all had a little bit too much of alcohol - ”

“You’ve already mentioned that one.”

“Because it’s very essential. So sometime that night, Vivian dragged a very drunken me into a room with a bed and shoved said drunken-me onto the bed.”

“Please don’t mention the details. I think, I’ll be scared for the rest of my life if you elaborate too much.” Merlin wouldn’t. He would be pining even more than momentarily but he definitely wouldn’t be scared.

“Don’t worry, there’s not much to elaborate anyways.”

“I’m not sure I understand.”

“As I said, I was lying on the bed and she was... well unbuttoning my trousers when I - I was very drunken, it’s important that you keep that in mind for the next part - I said your name.”

“What?!” Merlin felt the spoon slip from his fingers and heard it clatter onto the table.

“Not like that, you idiot. I was still mad at you and began a drunken rant about how you were not at the party and how you had less and less time for me because of exams and how I had less and less time for you because of football, parties and all that shit. And then Vivian complained that I more often talked about you than her. I said something like ‘well, yes of course’ and she got angrier. She insulted your ears, your skinny looks and the fact that you are gay and all that and I defended you. I mean what was I supposed to do? I’m the only one to insult you.”

Merlin hove a sigh. “Of course.”

“At the end I shouted something along the lines ‘I don’t want to be your boyfriend anymore if you treat my friends like that’ and well that was it.”

Merlin was too taken aback to say anything. It was typical of Arthur to defend Merlin. Since that stupid school play in primary school in which Arthur had played a knight and had saved a peasant played by Merlin from some monster with his plastic sword, he took the whole honour-defending and saving-from-threats a little too serious. Merlin kind of liked it anyway.

“So, you’re not at all sorry that your relationship ended?”

“Not at all. I mean, what was I thinking when I asked her out? She’s not even that pretty.”

“Oh, don’t say that. I know a lot of people at our school that think she’s the most beautiful human being ever to live on this planet.”

“Okay, she is pretty, but she’s so arrogant and overbearing.”

“Yeah, not at all like you.”

Merlin knew the sarcasm was easy to detect and Arthur punched his shoulder over the small table but not genuinely upset. They finished their ice cream. Merlin was glad that Arthur wasn’t depressed or anything because Vivian really was kind of dumb. And pretty.
