Most people go to college thinking they need it to get a good job. I went to college because I had to get away from my parents, who were killing me. I try to force myself to do things after work, so I don't just feel like my life = work. I also try to force myself to do creative work daily. I try to fight the system as best as I can, but it's hard.

I go to therapy, for which I have insurance, but psychoanalysis itself is rarely covered (because I think it's frowned upon in medical circles) and expensive, because, really, who but rich people could go and talk about their dreams and get them analyzed three to five times a week?

Not really addressing the issue of "the system" and how it is at play in the larger cycle of the shitty need to work--but have you ever considered doing freelance work? It's a pretty great balance if you like to set your own hours and be able to devote time to other passions (it's also great work if you don't really like "dealing" with other people ( ... )

What exactly do you write for the freelancing gig(s)? I do some sporadic freelance-type writing (for blogs, the local entertainment newspaper) and it's mostly show reviews, book reviews, interviews and other events-based articles. Maybe I go about it the wrong way, but I don't view any of it as creative writing, and creative writing is the only writing I enjoy.
