It's Time For Some Music!

The new Frankenmix is up, and here's my contribution.

February 2008 - Every Mile Is Two

1. A song about being recognized ~ The Fake, The Snake, and the Birthday Cake - Punchline
Five steps to the center we stand
Let's throw a coin up and see how it lands
The way we were, the way we weren't
Who's to say?
How much of you and me do you still see?

2. A song about an embrace ~ The Best in Me - Sherwood
and i wish i had a plane or a cable car
cause all i really want is to be in your arms

3. A song that mentions ice ~ Blue on Black - Kenny Wayne Sheppard
Cold on ice
A dead man's touch
Whisper on a scream
Doesn't change a thing
Don't bring you back

I really, really like this song. I've seen Kenny Wayne Sheppard twice, and he was fabulous both times. However, this was the last show I went to with my dad, and so I don't actually listen to this song a lot.

I have a lot of songs about cold, about freezing, but very few about actual ice. If I was to be slightly less literal here, I'd go with Dead End Road - Alkaline Trio
I thought that you were sleeping
When I found you there in bed
I found you there in bed
When I touched you you were freezing
It turned out that you were dead

4. A song about being lost ~ Perfect Teeth - Motion City Soundtrack
Back in '95, more deaf than alive
I wrote the screenplay to lack of direction
Late night movie "dates" with girls who skate and I just can't relate

5. A poetic song ~ Saints and Sailors - Dashboard Confessional
This is where I say I've had enough
no one should ever feel the way that I feel now.
A walking open wound, a trophy display of bruises
And I don't believe that I'm getting any better.

Dashboard Confessional is one of those bands where I either love the song or hate the song - there's no in between. This is one that I love.

6. A song about weaknesses ~ The Walking Wounded - Bayside
Scientists they couldn't fix me
I'm so tired of getting out of bed
Who would want to die as a cowardly little child?
When our time is up, will we be ashamed or proud?

Now this category I could fill with pretty much every song in my collection.

7. A song about getting paid ~ Banditos - The Refreshments
Well I got the pistol so I'll keep the Pesos
Yeah and that seems fair

I have loved this song since the very first second of it. I actually have a VERY hard time operating a moving vehicle when this song comes on, because I start dancing and stop, you know, driving. I do have to say, though, that this is on every road trip mix I've ever made.

8. A song about disenchantment ~ Good Fucking Bye - Matt Skiba
And when you lose hope
It's hard to cope
Watching the tyranny with sober eyes
The daybreak and sunset
All hours in between are spent murdering time

Bonus track - Disenchanted - My Chemical Romance

Come on, like you didn't see that coming.

9. A song about lies ~ Liar, Liar - The Used
Liar, liar, pants on fire
Liar, liar, stop your soul from catching
Fire, fire, god and maker
Liar, liar, you fucking liar

This song makes me want to give Bert McCracken a shower and a hug. In that order.

10. A magical song ~ Strange & Beautiful - Aqualung
I'll put a spell on you
You'll fall asleep
When I put a spell on you
And when I wake you I'll be the first thing you see
And you'll realize that you love me

Less magical, more creepy, but whatever.

11. A goofy song ~ SR - Reel Big Fish

This song is just, well, it pretty much encapsulates the RBF live experience.

title of the mix is from George Herbert - "Every mile is two in winter"

Bonus Youtube recs, originally compiled for pimping some stuff to sprat:

The Rocket Summer - So Much Love

Sherwood - Song in My Head

Dashboard Confessional - Screaming Infidelities or Thick as Thieves (My playcount on this song is ridiculously high as well, considering I claim not to dig this band all that much.)

Rise Against - The Good Left Undone

Against Me - Thrash Unreal (This is one of my favorites right now.)

Alkaline Trio - Stupid Kid

Bayside - Duality

Cobra Starship - Guilty Pleasure

Bonus Cobra Starship featuring, well, everyone they've ever met - Bring It
