PINE PINE PINE

Aug 04, 2008 10:00

I'm listening to Pride and Prejudice, which I downloaded today from the library.

If you know me IRL, I can understand how this may be confusing. However, I submit (again) Mr. Darcy as My Perfect Match.

Ugh, I pine for a Darcy of my own - an asshole to catch my fancy, but really a gentleman so I wouldn't have to actually live with an asshole.

wankery, whinging

gah, I could talk about Mr Darcy all day long-! plasticity August 4 2008, 15:47:45 UTC
yah. everyone loves him because a) he's blunt and a little rude but not inherently dastardly, and b) he genuinely sees the error of his ways and changes himself for the woman who points out his recent faults. I think this second part is what the most recent, Keira Knightley'd movie missed completely - they depict him as being shy and socially awkward instead, not actually changing but instead being misconstrued. But let's face it, he'd degenerated into kind of a snobby asshole by the time the book opens. (which of course is the appeal...)

I suspect the idea that a man (or anyone) could so completely and willfully change their behavior and prejudices in such a short time for love is what makes P&P the ultimate unattainable fairy tale.

...er, I should add that Book!Darcy is misconstrued as a complete asshole at the beginning of the book as well; I made it seem like Lizzie's perceptions were spot-on from the start and he changed that radically. I think the truth is somewhere in between - he begins the book a bit of an asshole, which Lizzie-the-POV-character conflates to epic proportions; and he changes his behavior as she changes her opinion, so they meet in the middle.

*sigh.* I love them.

my problem seems to be that I keep finding all the Mr. Wickhams and Mr. Willoughbys instead of the Mr. Darcys and Mr. Ferrarses.

Meanwhile, within a 20 mile radius... Bodices Ripping! (Mister Darcy!) Men Turning Gay! (Mister Darcy!) ... It was amazing. The end.
