“It’s chicken, chicken, chicken!!!!!!!”
Yoonhae, being the cool assistant she was, had to give in her 100 percent not to do a face palm right there and then. She bit her lower lip as she stared at the prince she was supposed to serve, looking 10 years younger than his original age at the sight of the carnival food stalls down the center of the town. They were selling various types of chicken dishes - barbecued chicken, chicken balls, chicken sandwich, popcorn chicken, fried chicken, and… Many more. Part of her wanted to burn down all the chicken stalls. But a larger part of her felt like smiling widely at the sight of a very excited Prince Onew.
“Prin- I mean Jinki oppa, please calm down. We wouldn’t want to attract attention.” Yoonhae uttered. Of course, she couldn’t address him as ‘Prince Onew’ or ‘Your Majesty’ now that they are trying to act like commoners.
“Oh, right, erm, sorry.” Jinki blushed. “It feels nice hearing you calling me that! You should just address me as oppa when no one’s around.”
“You know I can’t do that, Your Maj- I mean, oppa.” Yoonhae cleared her throat. Old habits are sure hard to change.
“Let’s look around!” Jinki tugged Yoonhae’s arm, and the assistant just let him drag her towards the centre of the carnival.
The people there seemed to be too excited to play and enjoy the carnival to notice their prince was walking around there, and Jinki was glad that no one seemed to recognize him so far. He played a shooting game (which he lost badly, in the end Yoonhae had to play in his place and win the small teddy bear for him to stop him from pouting) and strolled down the stands selling accessories and second-hand goods.
A particular silver
bracelet caught Yoonhae’s attention. She stopped in front of the stall, examining it before asking for the price. Jinki was busy browsing through the other accessories on the display - feeling amazed that those pretty looking things are affordable in such cheap price.
Of course Jinki had seen countless jewelries and accessories - the castle after all provided the princes with thousands of those. But those things were usually made out of pure gold or gems, and they certainly cost a fortune compared to the ones being sold here - but that didn’t mean that these affordable jewelries were any less attractive. Jinki had never liked wearing any accessories on him so he had never paid special attention to their values.
His train of thoughts was halted as he heard a soft “thank you” from Yoonhae as she passed a few gold coins to the stall owner. She was holding a decent looking chain that looked a bit too loose for her wrist.
“What did you buy?” Jinki asked, curious.
“A gift for a friend.” Yoonhae casually replied.
“And no gift for your prince?” Jinki pouted, showing some irresistible aegyo.
“Is there anything you want, Milord?” Yoonhae raised her eyebrows; surprised that Jinki was requesting a gift from her.
“Um.” Jinki considered. “Well it won’t be special if I chose the gift myself, right?”
“I guess.”
They explored around some more, Jinki holding Yoonhae’s hand securely, leading the way. Always the gentleman, Yoonhae smiled slightly.
She might appear like she was really enjoying herself - well she was, definitely - but the whole time she could feel someone watching the both of them. She continued acting like nothing was wrong so Jinki wouldn’t panic, but she secretly scanned the whole place, searching for any signs of suspicious people.
It definitely wasn’t easy to spot something in the midst of a festive crowd, so when the Jinki led her towards the same path for the fifth time (they kept walking around, Jinki wanting to buy more and more chickens), she finally told him it was time to go back to the castle as the sun was going to set soon.
“But…” Jinki seemed really disappointed. The wise, prince-like Prince Onew had somewhat disappeared replaced by a childish, innocent Jinki (who apparently spent his 21 years inside the castle, not really having the chance to experience what it was like to live in the world outside the tall walls). Yoonhae felt bad for ruining Jinki’s fun but his safety has to come first.
“I promise I’ll bring you out again one day, Your Highness.” Yoonhae assured, suddenly picking up her pace. Their roles were switched now - Yoonhae was the one leading the way. “Let’s go home.”
Jinki was about to protest again when all of a sudden Yoonhae yanked him to take cover behind a large barrel. A gunshot was heard and screams erupted; the stall next to them (which happened to be a fruit stall) gave way as the bullets pierced through the woods supporting the fruits carriages.
“My apples! My pears!” the middle-aged woman cried as her stocks scattered and smashed the ground - but she let out a yelp and ducked behind her stall as another gunshot was heard.
The festive mood immediately switched into streams of horror screams and cries, the people who were happily walking around, buying or selling stuffs were now frantically trying to gather what they could hold in hands before desperately fleeing to somewhere safe. Sounds of children bawling was heard from every corner of the heart of the town and Jinki, who was as scared and shocked at everyone else, was clenching his fist tightly.
“I’ll make sure to make the necessary arrangements to fix everything that’s broken and pay for everything that needs to be paid.” Yoonhae said sternly, placing her hand on Jinki’s balled fist. “Calm down, Your Highness. We need to get out of here.”
Amongst the chaos, Yoonhae caught a glimpse of a man walking towards the direction where she and Jinki were hiding. He was carrying a polished hunting rifle, his boots kicking dusts, as he got closer and closer.
“I know you’re there.” The man spoke, his voice full of hate. “Come out, Prince Onew.” He then seized a young lady who was hiding near him and placed the rifle pointing at her. “Or you’ll see this beautiful woman die in my hand.”
Jinki stiffened. So all of these were done because of him?
The lady in the villain’s hand shivered visibly, started to tear. Jinki gritted his teeth. There was no way he could stay still when his country people were harmed.
He was about to stand and do something to stop the commotion when Yoonhae beat him to it.
“Please let her go.” Yoonhae spoke calmly. Her left hand was gesturing Jinki to stay behind the barrel as she took two steps forward.
“And who is this lady?” The man scoffed. “You are pretty but I have no business with you.”
“Anyone who has something to discuss with the prince has to go through me.” Yoonhae replied coolly.
Another gunshot was heard. Jinki’s eyes widened but nothing seemed to happen to the crying lady hostage. He looked over to Yoonhae who was standing a few steps in front of him, but she seemed fine too. Except a small cut on her cheek, which was starting to bleed a little. The bullet merely grazed her.
“I won’t miss the next time.” He cocked the rifle again. “Move, bitch.”
Yoonhae straightened her already disciplined posture.
“Such a foul language from a vulgar person.” She commented.
“What did you say?” The villain was clearly losing his temper as he made a gesture to pull off the trigger.
Jinki blinked in less than three seconds Yoonhae had disappeared from his side and miraculously appeared right in front of the rifle, startling the villain. She knocked the gun upwards right before the trigger was pulled. The gunshot roared again, this time the bullet shooting at nothing into the sky. She kicked the villain in his stomach swiftly, hitting him a few times before the said man dropped onto his knees, coughing and in pain.
Within less than five minutes armored soldiers had arrived at the scene. When they arrived, Yoonhae was just done tying the bandit with a rope she borrowed from one of the ruined wine stand.
“Your Majesty!” General Kyuhyun slid down from his horse to kneel on one knee in front of Jinki. “I’m glad you’re all right, Sir. We’ll be sure to investigate this matter thoroughly.”
Jinki had been silent ever since the commotion started. He briefly nodded at Kyuhyun before his eyes browsed his surrounding. He felt as if someone was smashing his heart with a baseball bat as he saw a few of the villagers and townspeople peeking from their windows and behind the walls. They were all the same - looking frightened and anxious.
The colorful vibe he was so fond of a few moments ago had ceased to exist. He was supposed to be a prince, a royalty. He was supposed to protect his people.
“I’m sorry.” He spoke loudly, trying to make as many people as possible to hear him. Sure enough, the townspeople waited for him to continue. “I’ll make sure to pay all the loss you suffered from having to close your stalls. I’ll ask permission from the Dukes to spare budgets again to hold an even bigger festival. I’m so sorry.”
He bowed sincerely to them. Murmurs were heard from every corner of the place. Girls were gasping and pointing, mesmerized, as it was rare for them to see one of the two handsome princes downtown. Some of the people were angry with Prince Onew while some others were glad Prince Onew was fine. The rest just seemed relieved that everything was good for the moment.
Kyuhyun was instructing his men to drag the tied bandit away. Yoonhae watched Jinki in silence for a while before whispering, “We need to go, Your Highness.”
Jinki let out a sigh, shooting the town one last sad but determined look before letting Yoonhae help him to get onto a horse Kyuhyun had prepared to bring Jinki back to the castle. Yoonhae took the horse by the bridle gently, guiding it to walk with her.
“You’re walking?” Jinki asked, frowning.
Yoonhae gave him a ‘what-do-you-think’ expression.
“Get on.” Jinki demanded.
“I shouldn’t, Milord.”
“It’s a command.” Jinki said sternly. “Get behind me right now. Stop making me feel worst than I already am.”
Yoonhae grimaced a little before her shoulder slumped in defeat. Prince Onew never commanded her, ever. He had always treated her very gently. But she could understand his feelings at the moment. She gracefully swung her leg over the horse’s back, sitting behind Jinki as the prince hauled the bridle.
Even watching Jinki’s back, the assistant could tell how upset and bothered the prince was. And he definitely wasn’t even thinking about his own safety back then.

“Jinki hyung!!!”
Taemin was sitting on Jinki’s bed, waiting for him. The younger prince’s face emitted relief as he saw that his older brother was alive and whole. (He only called Jinki with his real name when no one except the two assistants and/or Key around)
“I heard about what happened… Thank God you’re fine, hyung.”
Minho bent his upper body respectfully as Jinki passed him to sit next to Taemin on the bed. Jinki let out another sigh.
“I’m sorry for sneaking out of the castle unnoticed. I shouldn’t have-“
“No hyung, that’s okay.” Taemin tugged Jinki’s sleeve. “We all know you are really worn out… You’re always in your working room, settling documents after documents. I wish I could help you with your work. I’m just glad nothing bad happened and they caught the bad man!”
Jinki smiled at Taemin and ruffled his hair with affection. His gaze then caught on the bandage on Taemin’s ankle.
“Tae, what happened to you?”
“Oh, just a small sprain, hyung, I’m okay.” Taemin swung his leg a little. “See? I can’t really walk but Minho’s really strong. He carries me everywhere.”
Jinki noticed the slight blush appearing on the calm looking assistant’s face. Yoonhae seemed to be fighting a knowing smile. Taemin’s ears were reddening as well, the butterflies in his stomach dancing as his eyes met Minho’s.
“We’ll leave you two have some brotherly moments. Minho, let’s talk outside.” Yoonhae bowed a little before heading out of the room.
“I’ll be back… I’ll just be at the corridor if you need me, Your Highness.” Minho told Taemin.
-*-
Jinki and Taemin had a long brotherly heart-to-heart talk that night. They were so engrossed in conversing that they fell asleep together on Jinki’s spacious bed. When the two assistants entered the bedroom in the morning, they were greeted with a sight of two adorable princes snuggling up to each other, their sleeping faces angelic and beautiful. It was such an endearing sight to see.
“Yah. Wake him up.” Yoonhae nudged Minho.
“Um.” Minho seemed unsure. “Why don’t you wake Prince Onew first, Noona?”
“He’s really a deep sleeper. It’s hard to wake him up so you should wake Prince Taemin up first.”
“Um.”
“Why do you seem so embarrassed?” Yoonhae raised her eyebrow.
“Uh - no.” Minho cleared his throat and composed his face, but his cheeks were still blushing. “Okay.”
The taller assistant rested his knee on the bed; his other leg still on the ground while his body leaned forward, tapping Taemin’s shoulder lightly.
“P-Prince Taemin, wake up, please?”
“Hng.” Taemin whined.
“Your Majesty, it’s morning.”
“Akshfasdfasa”
“T-Taemin…” Minho gulped a little, glancing at a very amused Yoonhae. “Hey. Wake up.”
Taemin opened his eyes, looking dazed. He then rolled off Jinki to face Minho and gave Minho a sleepy smile. He mumbled something incoherent before lifting both his hands up towards Minho, as if asking the latter to carry him.
Minho was trying hard to remain composed in front of his childhood friend because he was feeling self-conscious. He had managed to not let anyone know that Taemin recently would be really clingy when Minho attempted to wake the prince up. He wouldn’t wake up unless Minho pampered him in the morning.
Exhaling, Minho grabbed Taemin by both arms and hoisted Taemin. The young prince automatically wrapped both his arms around the tall man’s shoulder and legs around his waist. Minho secured an arm around Taemin’s waist to make sure the young prince did not fall off.
“Joy to the female servants of the castle.” Yoonhae chuckled. “They seem to be really worshipping the forbidden love between Your Majesty and Sir Choi lately.”
“You know, I really prefer you when we’re just being Minho and Yoonhae.” Minho confessed. “You’re warmer when you’re like this.”
Yoonhae shrugged. “It’s the same for you, I guess.”
Taemin let out a small grunt before burying his head deeper into Minho’s shoulder.
“I’ll bring him to his room, he needs to get ready.” Minho adjusted their position a little before making a move to leave. “I’ll see you later.”
“Later.” Yoonhae waved as the youngest prince and his assistant left the room. A smile was still lingering on her face.
She was about to turn and wake Jinki up when she heard a yawn.
“Good mor-ning” Jinki rubbed his eyes. “What’s for breakfast?”
“Pancakes, bacons and eggs.” Yoonhae replied. “Shall I ask them to bring the dishes here? So you can have breakfast in bed?”
“No, that won’t be necessary. Key would be really mad if I didn’t turn up for breakfast. Worst, he’d start to worry if I caught a cold and nag at me the whole day.” Jinki grinned. “I’m going to wash up…”
“Here’s your clothes for today, Your Highness.” Yoonhae handed Jinki a neatly folded stack of clothes. A simple white button up shirt with a checkered brown long pants. Jinki blushed as he saw a boxer neatly folded cleverly placed in between the other two garments - Yoonhae had been doing this for him for the past years and he still get embarrassed every time, at the thought of his assistant preparing him a fresh set of underwear. Of course, he would rather Yoonhae do it than the other maids.
“Oh, and Prince?” Yoonhae stopped Jinki as he took the clothes and was about to step into the bathroom. “Can you give me your left hand for awhile?”
Clueless, Jinki raised his hand, unsure. Smiling, Yoonhae took a step forward and slip on a silver
ring with a beautiful blue stone onto his forefinger, making Jinki’s eyes widened in surprise.
“You said you wanted a gift.” Yoonhae smiled shyly. “There you go.”
A few seconds passed in silence. Yoonhae almost stopped breathing when Jinki’s already outstretched left hand suddenly was caressing her cheek - right under the cut from the incident the day before.
“Thank you. And I’m sorry.” Jinki smiled sincerely.
