Premise: A Tough Girl's father is killed by a Dirty Bastard, so she hires a Tough Drunk to hunt him down. They are followed by a Tough Texas Ranger who also wants the Dirty Bastard. Everyone takes turns getting shot.
The end.
I don't get this movie. It's not particularly interesting people (but they're tough, that's more important than interesting, we're supposed to admire their Unrelenting Toughness) trying to kill each other. Why? Why not? It's just one more part of their bleak, bleak lives. I think there's supposed to be some redemption as they go along, too, but I wasn't feeling it.
But that's me. I have no interest in or admiration for people who have Grit the way the Cohen brothers said they do in interviews, and as most people seem to. True Grit is well made; it's well acted and well shot with good dialogue and pacing, plus a few interesting asides and humorous scenes to break things up. If stories about Grit and lots of shooting are your thing, check it out. Heck, maybe you'll see more to the story. I have a friend who thought the story was about characters with goodness in them rallying around Tough Girl because she had a pure heart untainted by the evil around her. Maybe a story of triumph and redemption earned through Grit will mean more to you, than it does to me.
