Movie review: Martin

Dec 29, 2010 11:02

A George Romero classic, Martin is the story of a young man who thinks he's a vampire. But is he one? We're never sure. He drinks blood, but needs razor blades and needles to get at it, is immune to crosses and garlic, and the sun doesn't bother him. Further, he's so shy he can barely talk to women, and his grandfather is insane, warbling that Martin is nosferatu and that he'll kill Martin someday. So is Martin really a vampire, or has his crazy grandfather and his own shyness just driven him to a delusion?

As this is a character story, and I love character stories, I was disappointed by Martin's execution. Several of the actors, especially the women, weren't very good, and I couldn't really relate to Martin. I was a shy kid at one point who loved gothic stuff, so he should have been someone who interested me, but he just wasn't, and watching him walk around town getting to know local housewives and trolling for new victims was actually kind of...dull.

A re-make was announced in May of 2010, and I look forward to that. With Romero's good ideas, Martin's interesting characters, and a more modern look at a few things, I think a really interesting movie can be made. But this film wasn't it. It had a collection of interesting ideas about both psychopaths and vampires, but they never came together.
