There are few things more surreal than your almost hopelessly-pragmatic-in-his-own-mind father talking fandom with your boyfriend. But it happens at my house, at least with LOTR. I vaguely remember being puzzled by this once myself, actually, when reading the Silmarillion.

The answer to your question seems to be a sort of combination of all of the above (a continuity error that could have been fixed by making it a different character but was instead going to be settled by a resurrection story), according to the information compiled on wikipedia.
