IDE / DE keldi April 19 2007, 22:38:59 UTC
The abortion ban ruling was specifically one type of abortion, not all. The specific procedure banned was "Intact Dilation and Extraction", which is one of three major late-term abortion methods. "Dilation and Extraction" itself is not banned. (The difference is that IDE results in an intact fetus after the abortion, while DE does not.)

Also, there is an important exemption in the law. The law explicitly allows the use of an IDE when the "life" of the mother is in question. As "health" is extremely broad (being in a hospital bed recovering from surgery technically counts as being in poor health) the term "life" was used to narrow things down. If the life of the mother is in question (so if there exists a reasonable chance of death if the procedure is not performed), the law does not apply.

And in those cases where the law does apply to an IDE, a standard Dilation and Extraction is completely legal ( ... )

It's more the idea of the "slippery slope" here. There is currently a level of moral conservatism being legislated higher than most any America has seen in decades. Not to mention that the "life of the mother" loophole is very small, depending upon interpretation. The laws in South Dakota currently allow NO provision for the mother's well-being, and the Supreme Court is upholding that--which has many pro-choice proponents very, very worried.

...also, technically, the D&E (dilation & evacuation) procedure is not exactly the same as the D&X (dilation & extraction) procedure. The difference is mostly procedural, if I remember correctly.

Aha, I think I was using a different set of terminology than you were. By IDE, I mean the one of the two procedures where the fetus is intact post-abortion, in contrast to DE which is where the fetus, uh, isn't intact ( ... )

Petco offers benefits [pretty good ones I'm told] to both full and part time associates. Also, Eric knows of an insurance company for self employeed people, that you don't actually have to be self employed to get.

Though I think the NelNet thing would be good.
