The registrar of the office of vital statistics for the city of Albany is my new hero. She called me back today after yesterday's frustrations, and reported that she'd fought her way up to the director, who finally said OK to domestic partner "as long as they bring you their certificate of domestic partnership" to which she reports that she said " ( Read more... )

yeah. i was expecting to sign on the line for "certifier, if not attendant" thinking that "attendant" had to be a medical professional. but it turns out that they say "attendant" means someone who was present at the birth vs. "certifier" as someone not present signing on behalf of someone else who was -- someone at the hospital signing for the doctor, usually, i guess. so by that definition, i was an attendant. kinda weird, but by the time we got to which line i was supposed to sign on, i sure wasn't going to argue!

She was correcting my spelling, I think. I had written "attendent." It is a very dangerous thing to be a picky copyeditor of other people's stuff, and yet not an ace speller. And then to forget to use the spell check after typing something very fast. Alas.

I was actually both correcting the spelling and remarking at the govt's odd word choice -- "attendant", however you spell it, sounds like you sat in the bleachers at the Knick.
