Chapter 5- Moonlight warmth

That night I peeked out my window, waiting for the last light to go out of the neighboring house before I slipped out again into the backyard stealthily to see Mandoongie. I was just about to make the turn at the wall near the back door when I hear a soft voice. I halt, shifting closer to the wall, eavesdropping.

I see Changmin’s huddled form, cradling his baby, putting her in the dog house with the new toy. He was singing a lullaby.

“I hope you had fun today baby girl” he whispers soothingly. “I sure did...you know I love you, little squirt. You’re the best present I could ever get...But...I also thank you for the present YOU brought ME.”

He tickles Mandoongie’s ear and smiles before going inside and lightly shutting the door behind him.

Figuring he went upstairs to his room to sleep I sigh, coming out from my hiding place, walking barefoot on the grass looking up at the moon.

“So he likes me” I say out loud. “At least I think...”

The moon seems to shine just a bit brighter as I realize for the first time in my life someone actually LIKES me. I look at Mandoongie and murmur, “Thank you sweetie. You’re such a little angel. I never knew how much you could change my life. I can see why Changmin is so close to you...you’re like a little baby...”

And as all babies do, this one chose to wake up just then, yawn, and bound around the backyard in nocturnal exploration.

O_O I hide behind the bushes on my side of the yard until Mandoongie stops right where I was and sniffs, staying there and wagging its tail. I give up and peek above the bushes.

“Hi sweetie” I say. It pants happily and lets out a bark.

“Shh shh or you’ll wake your owner up” I walk to the bare spot of the lawn and lift up the fence, expecting Mandoongie to come darting over.

She sits on her own side of the fence, walks in a circle, sits, then walks around again.

“You want me to go over there?”

Pant Pant Pant. Tongue lolls out.

This dog knows how to communicate.

I widen the hole in the fence more. No movement. I sigh, jumping over the fence.

“Didn’t you get enough excitement already today? Why don’t you go to sleep?”the little energy ball wiggles all over me like I’m a colossal jungle gym, panting happily.

“So Changmin sings you to sleep but then, you bad girl, you wake up in the middle of the night eh? Waiting for this mommy here to sing you back to sleep, hmm? What, is your daddy not enough?”

Mandoongie stands still and cocks its head at me, listening. I sit still as well, tilting my head to the side in response, but hear a slight ruffle. I look around cautiously but there’s nothing. Mandoongie goes back to wriggling in my arms as I try to catch her, sliding as slippery as an eel.

“Sit still now and I’ll tell you something...” I turn the doggie over onto its stomach and tickle it, carrying it over to its house, and setting it down gently.

“This time I’ll sing you my song...a song I made up...”

And I lift my face to the moon, as I softly start to sing.
This is the song, which I wrote the lyrics to

The puppy blinks its little eyes.

“Sleep, darling sleep...Let your worries fall...” I continue.

It blinks one last time and its eye don’t open again.

I let out a sigh as I look at it one last time, ready to stand up from constantly squatting there.

“You have a very sweet voice” I hear someone whisper in my ear, the breath tickling the nape of my neck.

A perver-HOLY SHI-!!!!!!

I start, jumping at the closeness of the voice, losing my balance and about to fall.

“Whoa whoa whoa.”

A pair of strong arms catch me before I fall on my butt, arms encircling mine, a face brushing its cheek against my cheek, resting his chin on my shoulder.

I see a swift glint in the moonlight from one of his ears. That’s all I needed to know.

“C-ch-ch-angmi-”

“Sh, you wouldn’t want to wake Mandoongie up now...”

Stoppit man, can’t you see your whispers nearly scared the crap out of me there? Not to mention the HUGE effect they have on me?!?

Apparently he doesn’t realize, because his arms soon slide from supporting my elbows to wrapping around my waist, slowly pulling me up as he hugs me from behind for a moment longer than necessary.

“Uh, and what exactly do you think you are-”

“Please, let us stay like this...” he responds.

Changmin’s point of view

It’s been a long time since I’ve spoken to a girl, looked at a girl, liked a girl, hugged her this close.

Seems that ever since I started my job, girls and relationships were an automatic prohibition, something I was never to speak of again, something I was never supposed to want- as long as I was to keep my career intact.

Hyungs are good companions and all but this girl, she’s different. Even surrounded by male staff and friends at work, I feel lonely. At concerts, talk shows, meetings, everywhere I’d go...but with Mandoongie and her it seems to fill that void in me.

I slowly take a deep breath, inhaling the light scent.

“Stay with me...” it was voiced as a question, but meant more as a command.

end of Changmin’s point of view

I could do nothing, perplexed by it all- his behavior, his embrace, wondering when this “let’s be chinggu-neighbors” turned into this.

To be honest, I wanted something more as well but if it was going to result in an awkward relationship, I’d rather just remain friends.

Which was hard to do, considering the elated, happy feeling I feel when he hugs me, hell when he merely looks at me and smiles.

I nod a response to his question, wondering if he caught it.

“Yes...” I whisper, just to make sure.

I turn around to face him. “You’re still wearing the earring.” I touch it as he smiles.

I stand there, looking up at his eyes, his cheeks, his nose, his lips, wondering what comes next in a situation like this.

And then he leaned forward and our lips brush. A simple kiss, but still full of meaning.

As we pull away I seemed to be pouting since he smiles and says, “Apparently you’re not happy with that kiss...let’s have a better one, shall we?”

And this time opens his mouth slightly and kisses me.

Two kisses in a row is a first, considering I haven’t even kissed ONCE YET, dammit. So this came as a bit of a shock.

Okay that was an understatement. I admit it. Chernobyl could’ve exploded next to me and it would’ve gone unheeded.

But when he uses his tongue to run it over my lips... GAH what a surprise that was. And he takes advantage of that gasp and slips his tongue in my mouth, roaming.

. . .Okay. . .I can now say bliss is an understatement.

“....miss me?” I hear him ask me, and I snap out of that wild daydream I was having and stared up at him.

“That much did you miss me?”

I look up at him, finger still on the earring. By now his bright smile turns into a devilish smirk as he continues hugging me.

“A....I......well...er...you see...”

He grins, showing his straight teeth.

“I certainly missed you” he chirps cheerfully. “Couldn’t sleep, so I stayed there on the patio couch, trying to cool down cuz it’s just so humid and hot-”

you’re making ME humid and hot, man -_-

“-but then you came and sang to Mandoongie and I just had to come out here.”

Speechless, I remain looking up at him.

. . .did he still not realize he was hugging me?

“Ah, and it’s such a nice night out...” he says, looking up at the moon and stars. “Wanna look at the stars for awhile?”

....and how can you say no to an invitation like that? So we spread out a blanket and laid on top of it, on our backs, heads touching, facing opposite directions.

“You don’t have work tonight?” I sigh. “Scared me to hell, I thought it was a robber or killer behind me”

Changmin laughs.

“Saturday and Sunday I have off. But even then, I’m usually alone here so I’d take Mandoongie to my hyungs’ and stay there. I work, but it’s lonesome to tell you the truth.”

He frowns.

“Believe me, I know what you mean...” I say softly.

“You do?”

“Yeah... the more you’re surrounded by people and schedules, the more alone you feel...you return to an empty home, eat alone, sleep alone, live alone...no one to talk to, no one to laugh with...everyone needs a companion”

We both sigh.

He lifts his arms above his head and his hand brushes against my shoulder before pulling gently on the t-shirt I had on.

“What are you doing?”

“Come over here, I can’t see you.”

“Pfft you don’t need to see me, you can see the stars!”

“The stars are so far away, I want something closer.”

Silence

. . .for a moment.

I stifle a laugh as I hear the faint gasp and his hands fly to his mouth as he mutters “I actually said that out loud? I SAID that out LOUD? Ackkk”

I laugh and get up, laying down next to him.

“Happy now? But...the blanket is too small for the both of us width-wise...it’s longer length-wise you know...”

“So I’ll just have to do this~” And he turns on his side facing me and wraps his arms around me and pulls me close. One arm rests against his chest, the other on his arm.

I look anywhere but at his face, blushing. From the corner of my eye I can see him smiling, can feel it as he looks at me, but I can also feel he’s probably blushing too. After one or two glances at him I can finally look at him, albeit still blushing.

Next thing I know we’re both asleep, looking at each other...and soon wake up in that same position, Mandoongie sleeping on top of us.
