Mornings with Changmin
Ever feel so sleepy you could feel your senses going, one by one? First hearing, then sight, then total consciousness until you jolt and continue staring bleary-eyed at the professor?
That’s what was happening to me. An 8.00 morning science class in a huge room with no windows, dimly lit, stuffy, projector humming along as it displayed a diagram.
Just before my chin slides off my hand and hits the desk, I feel someone from behind dig a pencil into my back. I hiss, jump, and turn around, glaring at who did it.
“Pay attention!” the stranger hisses through his teeth, pencil tapping the wooden desk.
I make a “who asked you?” face and give him a quick one-over.
Skinny, tan, long legs casually crossed under the table, frame leaning back in the chair, hair brown and wavy falling to one side in bangs. Huh, surprised I never saw him before in this class...did he always sit behind me?
I glare, lips pressed in a thin, straight line. My eyes glare wider, incredulous, as he smirks totally confident, twirling his pen in finger before directing his attention back to the professor’s words.
I whirl around. ‘What a jerk. He should mind his own business.’
But I make a mental note next time to bring coffee to keep me awake.
Astronomy class ends with a shuffle of papers and without waiting for a second jab from Mr. Jerk, I grab my bag and head to the bathroom. I feel his smirk burning my back and just flip my hair over my shoulders, letting out a small ‘urgh!’
Five minutes later I step out fresh and awake but end up nearly tripping over my feet at seeing him leaning against the opposite wall, arms crossed with a smirk. He unfurls his arms and straightens up upon seeing me come out of the bathroom. I put on the poker face Tiffany always teases me about.
“So what now, Mr. Snark? Gonna turn into a Mr. Stalker?”
“The name’s Changmin. And you know if I didn’t do that, you’d face-plant on the desk and end up with a bruise the size of Andromeda.”
“Har har” I scowl.
He had a point. I dart him a glance as we’re now walking down the hallway. His messenger bag slung over his shoulder, a hand in his pocket. He was wearing a long sleeved, blue cable knit sweater like one of those Ambercrombie models. Tch, I hated Ambercrombie. The place reeked of cologne a mile away.
I sigh. Still had the whole day ahead of me to go through. Suddenly I feel tired again.
“Coffee?”
A mug is shoved in my face and I smell the delicious, rejuvenating aroma of hazlenut, my favorite. Without a second thought, I grab the mug and down one, two, three mouthfuls. I feel alive again. I lower the cup from my face but turn pink from horror realizing whose mug this was.
“Uh, thank y-”
“Don’t mention it” he downs the rest in an instant, not caring I just drank from the same place seconds before. “So...taking this class for fun or-”
“You kidding?” I laugh. “I like science but no, this class is for the lab requirement.”
“Ah I see”
“So I assume you’re taking it for the easy A, Mr. Genius?”
“It’s Changmin, Chang. Min. Although my nickname is Genius.”
I lightly shove his shoulder.
He grins, much better than the smirk. “I’m taking it for my minor...”
“Ahh, another nerd I see.”
“Watch it, when I win that Nobel Prize we’ll see who laughs last.”
“Maybe in another few thousand light years mister.”
“First of all, light years aren’t a measure of time it’s a measure of distance...”
“Blaaa bla bla bla bla” I cover my ears as he laughs and shakes his head, amused.
Five minutes later and across campus, I wave bye-bye to my new lab partner and study buddy as Mr. Snark turned Friend Changmin heads off to his next class, math.
I run down the stairs of the gym, change in the locker room, and get ready for my next class.
