Chapter 1- First Encounters

groan I never was one for crying dogs.

I do wish that mutt would just shut it and leave me in peace. I toss and turn in bed, unable to fall asleep. With another frustrated sigh, I heave myself up in bed.

This was precisely why I hated dogs. And their damned owners. Have the dog home alone constantly and the dog wails its heart out for the neighbors to hear. Why bother having a freakin' dog anyway? This was the umpteenth time this month I've been unable to fall asleep because of the dog next door crying it pitiful wails. And then in the daytime, as I rush out to my summer job, I never spot that dog at all.

"Oh, will you shut it please?!?!?" I yank the blankets off in one swift movement and walk to the window. The moon shines silently, luminous on the sleeping houses of Seoul. A little farther off was said metropolis.

"I'm going to go see just where this lil mutt is and put a stop to this once and for all!" I mutter, ramming my feet into flip-flops, thundering down the stairs then out into the yard in tank top and sweats. I tie my hair into a messy bun, walking circles around the yard, trying to listen where exactly the noise was coming from.

The yard's lined with waist level bushes except for one large, bare spot where a bush used to be but was removed. Long story. Involving a runaway lawn mower. Not my best moment. But anyway, here I pause, hands on hips, looking up at the moon as if asking it for an answer. I sigh. It was a nice summer night, I'll admit- nice and cool with a light breeze.

"Come on buddy, whine one more time so I can get ya. You and your owner" I murmur through my teeth. Still no idea what I was going to do to the dog once I found it.

Again a long whine, a pitiful cry. It's from the neighboring house for sure. There, I think I see a tiny makeshift dog house- shabby looking thing with a ragged towel inside. I squat down at that bare spot, trying to coax the animal out.

"Here Fido. Here Spot" I whisper soothingly, using those typical nicknames everyone gives their dogs. Don't blame me, right? Admit it- most of the dog population has such names. I'm sure you each know at least one Fido, Spot, Rover, Rex, Max... the possibilities are endless.

"Here buddy, here boy, there's a good boy now, c'mon, I won't hurtcha, I just want you to stop crying so I can actually get some frea-"

What I saw I didn't expect. A tiny, dirty looking little thing, a white fluff ball with big eyes inches out from behind the house's wall towards the fence. It stares at me and whines again. I remain squatting even though my thighs are screaming against it.

"Well aren't you a small sucker! Got quite a loud voice though..." I say softly.

Loud enough to give me insomnia every night I dryly think but shove that thought down. Just keep talking, this way it doesn't bark and you can finally have peace and quiet.

The little ball inches forward.

"Cute little mutt, whatever you are" I say as it lets out a whine again and looks at me with those sad eyes. Geh.

I hold out my hands instinctively even though the fence bars us off. It rests its front paws on the fence and pokes its nose through one of the spaces. "Aigooo you're cute for a little rascal that keeps me up all night." I admit smugly. It whines again.

"I'm assuming you want company?" By now, I've given up and sat cross-legged on the floor. Pajamas be damned, my legs are tired.

"Hmm?" I cock my head to the side inquisitively, playing with the dog. I laugh as the dog also cocks its head to the side. It whines again, front paws still propped on the fence.

I lean closer and rest my finger on the fence, lightly poking the puppy's nose. It licks my finger. My other hand keeps my chin up.

"Hmm, you can't be more than a month or two old" I say. It stops licking my hand, throws back its head, and whines again at the moon.

"No no no, don't start again!" I say, eyes snapping. It only whines harder.

"Please go to sleep, go to sleep~~~" I start singing a desperate lullaby. "Go to sleep so I can go to sleep~" It quiets the dog down, but it paws at the fence more than ever.

"If you think that I'm going to bring you over here then you're...greatly...mista...ken"

The eyes did it. The eyes. And then one final whine. I couldn't help it. I am human...

I lean over and pull on the fence, lifting the bottom just enough to make a hole for it to squeeze through. I feel the little bolt of fur dash past my arm.

Now you've done it, it'll be running all around the yard before you can get it back over there.

But surprisingly it made a beeline straight for my lap. And stayed there. It looks up at me, tongue lolling out, panting.

Oh yes, you won, you know it I look down at it. Gingerly, I pat it on the head. I swear if it could, it'd start purring. I notice a small collar hanging around its neck.

"Pink..." I say. "So you're a girl..." It looks up at me with big eyes. I sigh. Great mess I've got myself into. I cradle the dog in my lap and rock back and forth as I think.

"...now what the heck to do for a puppy to go to sleep and stay asleep?" So I do what I'd do in the case of a two month old baby-

Sing.

Sing like my insomnia depended on it.

"푸른 하늘 은하수, 하얀 쪽배엔" (where did I get this song? here.)

The puppy’s eyes soon close. Still singing, I slowly get up, vault the fence with one hand- a miracle- and set it in its little house. It stirs as if realizing what's happening.

I sing a little softer, a little slower.

"Make it sleep, please god, make it sleep" And finally, thanks to the cooing night and chirping crickets, it finally falls asleep.

I tiptoe out of that yard, looking one last time at the ransackity doghouse.

You know, you're gonna need a more comfy dog house later on...

I finally get back to my own house and collapse into my own bed, the dog still on my mind.

The next night was the same thing. And the next. And the next. No sign of the owner, the dog keeps wailing.

"If this keeps up, I might as well camp out here" I groan to no one in particular, chin propped upon hand, after putting the puppy to sleep, getting up and shaking away the sleep from my legs.

Tonight took longer than usual. I look around the yard. It was just like mine, except not as many bushes and no garden at the back. From the looks of it, it wasn't a family living here..maybe a single person who didn't want to bother with gardening and just owned a dog as company.

I shrug off my curiosity for who exactly lived there, and head off again to go sleep, the moon shining cheerfully up above.

Meanwhile

"But you can't make me stay here again!" I explode.

"Changmin," the manager sighs. "We've been through this before~"

I have a dog, a baby I need to take care of! It misses me! No doubt it probably cries itself to sleep at night!!!" I continue.

The others snicker.

"Cut it out guys, at least you can leave your dogs with your family. My family is miles away and hell no they don't ever want a dog. I'm going to her."

"No Changmin," the manager looks me in the eye. &"Not at night. Don't give reasons for rumors to sprout. It's dangerous. You stay here. Period.

He walks away, leaving me clenching my fists, looking out at the moon through the window, thinking about my Mandoongie, my baby, my responsibility.

"Don't worry girl..." I whisper, looking out at the moon. "I will be back again tomorrow...and this time, I'm finding a solution."

End of point of view

A humid, still summer night. The kind where lethargy weighs down on you just as heavy as the humidity of the evening.

"Come on doggie, sleep" I command, already nodding off and leaning my head on the doggie house, sitting on the grassy lawn.

The crickets were chirping and the frogs were humming rhythmically. It merely whines and looks up at me. I sigh.

"What do you want me to do? Eh? The most I can do is offer you company and sing to you. Don't expect me to start bringing food or I'll go bankrupt."

It whines again, sitting at the door of its house, looking up at me. I sigh, ruffling my hand through my hair, sitting there on the grass before I finally hold out my hands and say "Come here." It instantly bounds over to where I was, one wriggling ball of fluff. I lean back and lie on the grass, looking up at the stars with fluffball on my stomach.

"Look, there's Venus" I point out. "And Orion. The Dippers...Big and Little...hmm, you could even see Cassiopeia..."

I sigh, feeling the little idiot lying there, looking at me instead of at the stars, panting away.

"You want me to sing to you again, right?" I ask and sigh. "What'll it be then this time, mademoiselle? Which song do you want me to sing?"

Arf!

"Hm, how about the first one..."

And I started singing that old lullaby again. Geez this dog. I've practically established a closer relationship with it than my co-workers. And let me tell you, that is sad.

Soon I feel my stomach getting heavier as the dog finally falls asleep. Not much later my eyes close as well, lulled by the sounds of the night on that grassy lawn near the doghouse.
