~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~CHAPTER 7~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"...I think if there was seaweed in the miso it'd be better, and it'd give it more taste. I think we have a whole bag of seaweed in the refrigerator- why didn't you take it?" Jaejoong asks.
Min-Ri turns red and lowers her head.
"Sorry guys...I shouldn't have been so selfish...bottom line is, whenever I see seaweed...urk....I guess you could say I have seaweed- phobia" she says quietly.
"Oooh so that's why!" Jaejoong says.
"Wait wait, lemme guess lemme guess...first time you tried seaweed it was the long dry kind..." Junsu says.
"Y-yes" Min-Ri says surprised.
"Ahhh! And I bet you didn't have any water around" Junsu continues.
"Junsu's on a roll here" Yoochun whispers to Changmin, making him laugh.
"Yes, I didn't have any water around...and I was starving at that time over a friend's house...so i grabbed the first thing I found and..." Min-Ri says.
"And I'm assuming the seaweed stuck in your throat, you had the taste in your mouth, you ran to spit it out and then you have a 3 meter distance from seaweed from then on!" Junsu says triumphantly.
"Yes, that's exactly what happened...but how did you know?" Min-Ri wonders.
"Experience" Junsu says with a mouthful of curry. The guys laugh harder.
"I'm serious! First time I tried seaweed the same exact thing happened to me!" he smiles cheerfully.
"But if seaweed is the main staple of your country and you have to eat it every single day, sooner or later, you've got to get used to it!"
"Now we have operation get-Min-Ri-to-eat-and-love-seaweed-without-knowing-it!" Jaejoong smiles slyly.
"Ahhh! Nooooo, no no no!"
"Wow, talk about a really strong phobia!" yoochun jokes.
CHangmin looks over to Min-Ri, who lost a bit of her quietness and now seemed a little more at ease.
"Poor Min-Ri...we should try our best to get your mind off of your burden..." he thinks.
-Later-
"Wow, you guys cleared everything!" Min-Ri exclaims in amazement.
Jaejoong laughs and says, "In the DBSK household, never expect leftovers!"
"Especially with Changmin around!" Yoochun says, getting pounced on by Changmin.
Junsu stretches. "Well guys, I'll go shower first then hit the sack, 'kay?" and runs to the bathroom.
"Ahh, wait wait, then I'm next!" Jaejoong says and runs to go get his things ready.
Yoochun, who was still wrestling with Changmin and had Changmin hanging onto his waist, tries to run as he says, "I'm next after Jaejoong! Ahhh Changmin get offa me!"
Changmin laughs and says, "Next after Micky!"
Meanwhile, Min-Ri looks back and forth at the guys as they claim their turn. She finally turns to Yunho with a blank and somewhat helpless look on her face and says, "So you're the last?"
"Yup, as always the leader goes last for the sake of his members. Ah, but you go on ahead before me!" Yunho says.
"Wha-nooo no no, that's ok, this is your house I'll go last don't worry!"
"Nooooo, you go ahead! And I'm not taking no for an answer!" Yunho says and frowns.
Min-Ri sighs and says in a small voice, "Ok then" and goes to get ready.
-Later again-
After half an hour or so, Changmin comes out of the steaming bathroom and says, "Min-Ri ssi! Y-your turn!" and turns red.
Min-Ri, coming from the living room, looks down at the floor as she says, "Thank you Changmin oppa" turning red as well.
"Yunho oppa are you sure you don't want to go fir-"
"Yeeees Min-Ri ssi I'm sure! GO!" Yunho's voice comes from the direction of his workroom, along with random noises from the computer game he was playing.
Once Min-Ri goes into the bathroom she notices a necklace on the sink counter top.
"Ah, hey, Changmin oppa is this yours?" she picks up the black stringed necklace with a single pendant.
"Ahh yes yes! Thank you!" Changmin runs in and gets the pendant from Min-Ri. Their fingers touch for a brief moment before they jump and move away.
"Eheheh...n-no problem!" Min-Ri says then closes the bathroom door. As she takes her shower, her mind's running a hundred thoughts per minute.
'I can't believe I'm doing this, it's a good thing these curtains aren't see through. Omo, what was that noise? AHH I FORGOT THE DOOR CAN'T LOCK. Ohhh, I hope no one comes in. Ack, what about Soo-Young who's in the hospital? I see someone passing by! Oh no, that was just a shadow, whew...next time- BATHING SUIT!'
With her mind worrying about so many things, it's a wonder she gets out 15 minutes later.
As she steps out of the bathroom in her shirt and sweats she notices Yunho leaning against the wall, arms crossed, frowning at her.
Yunho frowns at Min-Ri, who in return has a surprised and scared face.
"What were you doing in there?!? What took you so long?" Yunho asks her.
Min-Ri blinks and looks shocked. "Wh-wha?"
"You know how long I was waiting here?!?"
"Y-Yunho oppa, I'm sorry! I tried to hurry as much as I could! No playing with lotions or anything" Min-Ri explains.
"Honestlyyyy, I was waiting here for 14.9 minutes!" Yunho says.
Min-Ri stops. "...you mean to tell me you stood out here and timed me?!?"
"Yes, so? And now it's 15 minutes by the way!" Yunho arches his eyebrow.
"You actually waited out here and timed me, to see how long I was in there?! I didn't even take that long!"
"Oy, that's what I did to the others in the past- whenever they pass 10 minutes I yell at them that I'm gonna break their back and turn the ice cold water on and before I'm even done talking they're out."
"Ackkk, what kind of leader are you?!?"
"One that conserves water" Yunho ;P
"Oh, 5 extra minutes of water?!?"
"Think of the consequences!" Yunho exclaims.
"Oh honestly..." Min-Ri says.
"And besides, you have short hair! If you had long hair like other girls then I'd understand but hey-"
"Don't mess with the hair, don't say anything about the Audrey Hepburn hair!" Min-Ri warns him.
"Audrey wha-?" Yunho says confusedly.
"You heard me! And watch, now that you're gonna go in, I'm going to time you and see how long you take!"
"Oh, wanna bet? I bet I can make it in 5 minutes flat!"
"I say 10 minutes!" Min-Ri declares.
They both glare at each other and then Yunho goes into the room, smirking and trying to suppress a smile.
Min-Ri meanwhile sits against the wall, staring at the clock.
The others already have gone to sleep. It was getting late. Min-Ri feels her eyelids drooping and struggles to stay awake.
"Ughh, this is gonna be my first night...in...their...house...jesus..." she says to herself sleepily.
She focuses her gaze on the clock once again.
10:30...10:33...10:35...
Yunho bolts out of the bathroom, out of breath.
"So, what time is it?"
Min-Ri looks up at the clock and exclaims triumphantly, "10:36! Hah! 6 minutes! I wiiin!"
"Technically you didn't, cause you bet 10 minutes..."
"But don't you tell me you won- you passed 5 minutes!" Min-Ri retaliates.
"Ok, ok, let's call it a truce!" Yunho says, unable to prevent the grin from spreading across his face.
"Wait...were you just messing with me?" Min-Ri gives him a squinty-eyed look as Yunho can't hold it anymore and breaks down in silent laughter.
"Ah, stop! I don't believe this! I-aaahhh..." Min-Ri yawns
"It's late...let's get some sleep...I take it you're not gonna sleep in our bedroom?" Yunho smirks at Min-Ri.
"No...I'll sleep on the couch...I already have everything ready...but watch it, next time, I'll catch you at 10 minutes!" Min-Ri says.
"Oh yeah? And next time, I'll turn the ice cold water on you!" Yunho sticks out his tongue at her playfully.
Saying this, Yunho reaches out and pulls Min-Ri up.
Then, grabbing her by the wrist he pulls her gently to the living room, since Min-Ri's so dead tired she can't keep her eyes open.
"Heh...pathetic...after 11:00 it's lights out for me wherever I am.." she mumbles half to herself.
"It's better that way...that means you're taking care of your body" Yunho reassures her.
"A-hhhhnnn" Min-Ri covers her yawn and heavily nods.
She plops onto the couch.
"Good night! Thank you for..letting...me...stay..." and she falls asleep.
Yunho smiles and says "G'night Min-Ri ssi!" and walks to his bedroom.
Through the window, above the glimmering skyline of the buildings, the sky is overcast.
In the distance, flashes are seen here and there and a soft, distant rumble can be heard of the approaching thunderstorm...
"KA-BOOM! KA-BOOM!"
Min-Ri jolts awake and looks at the digital clock on the table next to her.
2:30
She looks around and tries to remember where she was.
"Couch...living room...apartment? Wha-ohhhh, right, I'm in...their apartment..." Min-Ri sighs.
She tries to remember why she woke up but shrugs it off and is just getting under the covers again when another "KA-BOOM!" makes her jump.
“It-it’s nothing, it’ll go away soon, it’s nothing, it’ll go away soon!” Min-Ri chants to herself, drawing her knees up to her chest and resting her head on them.
Every now and then a flash of lightning followed by a boom of thunder would occur, making Min-Ri jump.
Unknown to her, in the guy’s bedroom, Changmin gets up as well.
But for a different reason.
“I’m thirsty” he announces to no one in particular and then heaves himself up and meanders through his hyungs’ beds to the door, careful not to wake them up.
He tiptoes to the kitchen, gets a glass of water, downs it in one shot, and then after leaving it in the sink, starts to make his way back to the bedroom.
But he sees Min-Ri huddled on the couch, her arms around her knees, head down and hidden.
'Shouldn’t she be asleep? What time is it?!?' he thinks and slowly approaches the couch.
He sees her shaking shoulders.
Just then, another peal of thunder sounds, causing Min-Ri to jump again.
He realizes what's wrong and slowly approaches and sits down on the couch next to her.
Min-Ri doesn’t even notice, so absorbed is she in convincing herself she wasn’t scared.
“I’m not scared of the dark, I like the dark, I’m not scared, of course I’m not!”
“Hey” Changmin says softly.
Another “KRA-KA-BOOM!” scares her as she involuntarily wraps her arms around the first thing she can find.
And no, it wasn’t her pillow, which was squished to a pulp right about now and lying on the floor.
It was Changmin.
And he was frozen like a statue, not knowing what to do.
'Ahh, what do I do? Ack…hyungs…now would be a good time!' he thinks.
Luckily, Min-Ri realizes she’s not holding her pillow since her pillow’s not shaped so much like a human and doesn’t have a heartbeat, and immediately lets go and backs away.
“Omo…Chang-Changmin oppa! What’re you doing here?”
More thunder, but this time she grabs her pillow and presses it over her ears.
Changmin tries not to chuckle.
Taking her pillow away gently, he says, “Come on…I’m here to keep you company…now, go to sleep!”
“E-easier said than done!” Min-Ri cringes at the thunder.
“Here, sit up and put your head on my shoulder” Changmin instructs.
Min-Ri blinks and looks at him as if he was nuts. Which he probably was. She laughs
“Wha~?” she says.
“Come, do it…” he gently uses his hand to tilt her head as she’s frozen like a robot O__O
“Ok?” he asks her.
She stiffly nods.
Changmin starts singing a lullaby, softly, slipping his arm through Min-Ri’s.
He uses the lullaby his mother sang to him when he was young, going through the same fear he had of thunderstorms.
Whenever the thunder overhead cracked and boomed, Changmin just strengthened his voice so that it rose above the noise. And it was working, since Min-Ri didn’t flinch anymore but just sat there quietly, listening to his song and humming along.
When Changmin finishes, Min-Ri smiles and murmurs “Thank…you…Chang…min…o…ppa…”
The thunderstorm has finally passed and now the rumbling gets fainter and more distant.
Changmin can feel his shoulder getting heavier which means that Min-Ri has fallen asleep.
He smiles and lightly grasps Min-Ri’s hand, their arms still intertwined.
'I guess I’ll keep her company and stay here for just a little…while…longer…' Changmin thinks and yawns as he leans his head on Min-Ri’s and falls asleep as well, completely unaware of what they must look like to someone else.
-Later-
Changmin wakes up with a start, trying to see where he was.
He checks the digital clock which says 4:00.
He wonders why the clock and living room look so strange and looks up then realizes- while Min-Ri is still sleeping in a sitting position, he moved and now his head is on her lap.
His first instinct is to jolt up but then he reconsiders.
Instead, he gently lifts up his head and then, getting up, slowly lowers Min-Ri to a laying down position and covers her with the blanket.
He quickly glances out the window to see that the sky is now a light purple, thinning to light, instead of a midnight blue-black as it was before.
Taking one last look at Min-Ri, Changmin smiles and tiptoes back into the bedroom where the others are still sleeping soundly.
Plopping down onto his bed, he smiles into his pillow as he falls asleep again.
