Wake Up Call

Summary: The harshest lesson in life, is realizing that a human life could easily be taken away.
A/N: This is a short drabble that I wrote a year ago. I'm still having a hard time writing something new, so hopefully this will make up for my absence.

The last soldier finally fell amongst the pile of bodies with a bullet straight to the heart. Changmin sucked in a breath and slumped down against the wall, wincing when he reached up to wipe off the sweat from his brow, only to realize that it was blood instead.
He casted a glance at the rubble and the countless dead bodies of his enemies and comrades strewn on the floor around him. He hoped, as the rest of his comrades came storming inside the room to check for remaining survivors, that among them, was his partner-in-crime. His lover, he would call the other man. But as he figured, the man in particular, didn't come.
"Changmin! Changmin! Oh thank goodness you're alive!"
Changmin looked up with half-lidded eyes to see his friend running towards him.
"Hyung?"
"Yoochun! Come here! I found Changmin!" Junsu waved an officer over. Yoochun rushed forward, careful to avoid stepping on the dead bodies, and pulled his dazed friend tight against his chest.
"You're alive! I thought we were going to lose both of you!"
Changmin let himself be embraced as his eyes welled up with tears, not because they had successfully discovered their enemy's hideout and wiped out their men, but because he had lost his most precious person in the world.
"Jae ... He ... He ..." Changmin sobbed and Yoochun understood, tears streaming down his dusty cheeks as well,
"I know. I know."
Junsu furiously wiped away the tears from his eyes, frustrated and angry at the fact that he didn't make it in time to prevent his cousin's death.
"Good job, Shim."
The three friends turned to find their commanding officer standing there with a small frown, but his eyes remained hopeful despite their situation.
"We'll make sure that your partner will have a good send off."
Changmin let out a choked sob and felt Yoochun cling to him tighter. He closed his eyes and nodded,
"Thank you, sir. I'm sure Jaejoong would like that."
