KyuHyun POV
Reaching home at 11pm in the night, I spotted a little figure sitting at a corner of the couch, watching “SpongeBob square pants” in the darkness. Is that little chap waiting for me?
Putting down my bag in exasperation, I took a few steps closer to him and asked,
“Taemin? Are you sleepwalking again?” Taemin looked up at me with droopy eyes; now, even a kid living in this house had worries?
“What is it, Taemin?”
“Appa, I’m lovesick.” Taemin sighed as I tried to control my laughter.
“Taemin, do you know what lovesick is?” He nodded childishly and started explaining.
“Umma told me that the feeling is like… not drinking milk for days.” I can’t believe Sungmin told him that.
“Tell me about it, Taemin.” He moved closer to me even though he knew that I did not really like it.
“There is this girl in kinder garden.”
“Oh, and what is her name?” I answered, trying to add a little enthusiasm in my tone.
“Min Jung.”
“And how old is she?”
“Appa, we are in the same class.” He rolled his eyes in the same manner as me and continued.
“But she rejected me when I told her that Cho KyuHyun is my uncle.”
“What’s wrong with me being your uncle?”
“She said her sister doesn’t like you.” I can’t believe it! How could any girl dislike me? I crossed my arms, feeling really annoyed with what Min Jung said to Taemin.
“You know what, Taemin? You can find a better girl in future.”
“But I like Min Jung, Appa.” I replied as Taemin pouted again. Shifting his gaze away from me, he continued watching the cartoon on television quietly. But yet again, why was Sungmin feeling lovesick?
“Taemin.” Taemin turned around to look at me, as he tilted his head to the side.
“Umma…is love sick?”
“I don’t know.” I took a deep breath and turned off the television.
“You should go to sleep, Taemin. You shouldn’t be watching cartoon so late at night.”
“Then why is there cartoon showing now, Appa?” What is wrong with this kid? I smiled at him and pointed my finger towards his room. Taemin jumped off from the couch and smiled at me,
“Goodnight Appa.”
“Don’t sleepwalk Taemin.”
… … … …
“Appa will fetch you to kinder garden today.” I played with the poorly marinated Kimchi in my plate, and took a sip of the coffee. Sungmin looked at me across the table suspiciously,
“Are you sure?”
“Of course.” I replied confidently, as Taemin carried his bag and volunteered to hold my hand. Waving to Sungmin, Taemin skipped to the doorstep excitedly.
“Appa, you want to see Min Jung, right?” Taemin asked me after I closed the front door. Feeling speechless for a moment, I no longer had the doubt that he wasn’t my son.
“As if you are getting married, Taemin-I just want to know how your Kinder Garden looks like.”
Opening the car’s door for him, Taemin climbed up the seat and put on the seatbelt automatically, waiting for me obediently to start the engine. I am starting to like this feeling, gradually, without myself knowing it.
… … …
Tugging my hand tightly, I tilted my head down and spotted Taemin blushing; His rosy cheeks were even redder. Shifting my gaze to look at what he was looking at, I bend down a little and whispered into his left ear,
“Is that Min Jung?”
“Yes, Appa.” As Min Jung approached us, Taemin backed away a little and tried to hide behind me.
“Taemin, stand out and be a man!”
“I’m a boy, Appa.” I shook my head helplessly and watched as the little girl stood in front of us and scanned me from head to toe.
“Are you Cho KyuHyun?” I nodded my head and forced a smile back.
“Are you Taemin’s Appa?”
“No, I’m not.” My heart skipped a beat when I heard her question. It seemed as though she knew something that everyone else doesn’t.
“Can I play with Taemin?” Taemin peeped from the back as Min Jung reached out her hand for his. Shifting myself away from him, Min Jung held his hand and skipped towards the play room together. Taemin is indeed my son-getting loads of attention from the opposite gender.
When Taemin and Min Jung were out of sight, I walked towards the garden as I fished out for the vibrating phone from my pocket.
“Hello?”
“KyuHyun, are you free on Saturday night?” The seductive voice asked from the other side of the line. It was the actress that acted with me in the movie.
“Why?”
“Are you busy?”
“No, of course not.” I replied without thinking twice, and started to regret about my rashness.
“That’s perfect, 9pm, at the same restaurant.” Before I could reply, she ended the call.
Walking back into the shelter, I looked through the window at Taemin, who was playing happily with Min Jung. His smile made me feel even more troubled; it felt as if I am committing an affair even though Sungmin and I were not legally married.
We seemed to be exceptionally quiet today during dinner. Sungmin was scanning through the back of the newspaper, trying to look for a job; while Taemin seemed to be living in his own world, looking around mindlessly at the both of us.
It was then when Taemin put down his fork and spoon and Grabbed hold of Sungmin’s hand, as he reached out for mine across the table.
“Umma.” Taemin looked at Sungmin as she leaned towards him,
“Why does Umma and Appa don’t have a ring?” Sungmin bit her lips, not knowing how she should answer his question. Shifting my hand away from Taemin, I spotted Sungmin looking at me across the table.
… … …
I paced to and fro in the sitting room, as I waited for the moment to approach Sungmin, who was sitting on the couch watching television. Slamming the remote control the couch, she turned around to look at me irritably.
“Can you STOP walking?”
I looked at her for a moment and swung the velvet box in my hand towards her.
“Catch this.”
Sungmin caught hold of it agilely and started turning the box between her fingers. Opening it slowly, she stared at the ring in the middle of the box; taking it out between her fingers, she turned around again and looked at me in confusion.
“What?” She asked.
I lifted up my hand and showed her my left hand with a similar ring on my finger.
“At least Taemin would not be asking us about that anymore.” I smiled and walked back into my room. Just as I close the room’s door, I caught a glimpse of Sungmin, putting the ring on her finger and slivered a smile.
Author’s Note: For fans who knows it, I have added 2min (Taemin + Minho) into the story. The female version of Minho would Min Jung (:
