You can change where the ads are placed on your Customize page. I would suggest placing the ads Between Entries.

i'm using this layout for a community and several of my members are complaining about not being able to see the "drop shadows" under the entries and on the sidebar. i'm using firefox, and so is at least one other member but she still can't see them.

do you happen to know what may be causing this?

Only the latest version of Firefox supports drop shadows. They'll need to update to see them.
