She remembers the day her daughter first met the prince, the way their eyes met each other’s and stayed, even at that awkward age of eight when he should have been poking her with a stick and Tara should have been off in a corner crying about it.
The queen wasn’t stupid, she knew that their fate was sealed even then, long before the love letters and midnight meetings in the enchanted forest that she was supposed to be blissfully unaware of.
She supposed that she could have separated them sooner, married her off to that awful little dwarf king in the fifth kingdom, but she had actually been concerned about her daughter’s happiness!
She could care less now, not when her daughter was married at the ripe old age of nineteen, (a good five years before she had been) loved and adored like none of the many queens before her.
“She’s so wise!” they said. “So smart and virtuous! Nothing at all like her horrible mother.”
The queen snorted and started to brush her hair. This was her worst nightmare.
Tara might have had an entire kingdom under her thumb, but Maureen had her own once. She had been considered a great beauty, as graceful and delicate as she was fierce and powerful. Her power may have been taken after they found out her husband’s death hadn't exactly been an accident, but her beauty remained, and no one, not even her sickeningly perfect daughter, could ever take that away.
She smiled at this, lifting her head to look at her reflection before screaming as she brought a hand to her face.
It turned out that you really could turn green with envy.
