Much to R.'s chagrin, I have never be able to get into Stephenson. I find his worlds entirely unrelate-able (is that a word?) and his characters to be uninspired. I fear ANY story that requires 8 separate books to tell it - I just can't imagine anything being that compelling. Perhaps that's not fair of me, I'm not sure...
As for "she does rely also on her beauty and 'feminine wiles' and I can't help but notice that the men only rely on their minds and/or their strength" - why does this surprise you? To me, that's the characterization of women in general and I don't find it any more cliche that male characters relying on their strength, physical or otherwise. So long as women have an intimidating intellect, and the upper hand in most sticky situations, they could walk around in only a thong and band aids as far as I'm concerned (some men - and hence, some male characters - will only ever think with their cocks). Be happy that there were ANY strong, smart women at all. Most writers who see women as 'other' tend to avoid them or make

Oh, you're using the flaming baby eyeballs again. Ack!
I dunno. Maybe I'm an optimist? Maybe because I actually share some of his interests I hope for a female character I can relate to? I didn't actually say this surprised me, it just irks me. There are male others who seem oblivious to the existence of women, male (and actually female) authors who demonize women and then there are authors whose gender seems irrelevant as are able to write convincing and interesting characters of all sorts.
The characters were quite good in these books, though ever once in a while Eliza would do something which broke my suspension of disbelief.
