DRAMA CD MEANS I SUCK
O... okay THIS POST IS RESERVED FOR EMO AND SORTING THROUGH THINGS RELATING to Ryoutou's drama CD track that is a FLASHBACK TO HIS MEETING SONKEN.
First of all, KOUSAN is a continuing series, my knowledge of Japanese is limited, etc, etc. I've made mistakes, I'll continue to make them WHATEVER IT HAPPENS. I keep the characterization as best as I can and try to get every available piece of information because goddammit I like having all the gaps filled.
But this drama track SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME. SO LET'S GO. Super duper thanks to dosetsu for putting up with my crap and whining and freaking out and helping me sort through this.
I WAS WRONG:
- Ryoutou has been telling people that he's known Sonken "As long as [he] can remember." THIS IS INCORRECT. They met by accident when they were younger and Ryoutou had gotten lost during a festival. It can't have been TOO FAR into the past because the voices are the same, but since the relationship chart says they're childhood friends, it was probably in the range of five years ago, which would put Ryoutou at eight and Sonken at thirteen. I DON'T KNOW IF THERE IS A DATE ON THIS.
I WAS RIGHT:
- The "Suki" on the relationship chart from Ryoutou to Sonken? It's an ambiguous "Like." But this drama CD track confirms what I suspected, and that it's a romantic love. Because goddammit, Ryoutou said that Sonken's face was so beautiful it outshined all the fireworks. AND DAMN IF THAT AIN'T SOME SUGGESTIVE POETRY THAR.

THIS IS A SCARY PASSAGE, because SONKEN DOESN'T CORRECT HIM. In the anime, Sonken is referred to very specifically in episode two as male. "Brother? Then this young man..." with the word shounen being the key word here. In episode eight, Sonken encounters Ryuubi, who circles him and says "Are you really a man? You look like a woman!" Which... throws things back into the realm of ambiguity here. SO I AM SEEING THREE POSSIBLE ANSWERS:
- Ryoutou was suckered in by the TRAP THAT IS SONKEN, but really cares so much for Sonken that GENDER DOESN'T MATTER FOR SERIOUS ;o;!
- Ryoutou was suckered in by the TRAP THAT IS SONKEN, but is growing up gayer than a barrel of monkeys on nitrous. (This is kind of how I'm playing him already)
- Sonken is a woman, Ryoutou is covering for her, and she is, FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, a male. Ryoutou LIEKS THE LADIES BUT IS PLAYING GAY FOR HER.
