Pacing with drink in hand, she wondered what Amelia was. They had a standing arrangement to spend Friday night together. Emmeline fretted about what kept her. It wasn't the MLE, the Aurors were finished for the night; she had been speaking to Gideon about their next mission when Kingsley had arrived.
Amelia was never late, she was horribly punctual about everything. Emmeline glanced at the formal table setting with the china and lit candles, the warming spells on Amelia's favorite dishes. Everything was perfect for her to talk to Amelia about their friendship. Finally, she heard a ping and quickly kneeled in front of the fireplace, setting her drink on the floor.
"Em! I know we had plans tonight, but can I cancel them?"
"Pardon me?" she asked, hoping Amelia couldn't see the room behind her.
"Fabian asked to stay late, and Em… he asked me out! For tonight!"
Quiet, sturdy Amelia was giggling and moving abruptly as if she couldn't stay still.
With a fake smile, Emmeline nodded and quickly cut off the call. Distraught, she picked up the fire poker and drove it through the goblet. Sitting there, unable to move, she watched the expensive wine drain away.
