Title: Away Author: Mink Rating: NC-17 Spoilers: General Disclaimers: DA & characters are owned by their various creators. Summary: X5-494 finds out just eactly what his place is within the walls of Manticore.
Oh, wow, this was just heartbreaking and excellent. That last line is just killer; it has so many levels and all of them hurt so good. I especially love what you did with the "was ignorance really bliss for the transgens?" theme of S2. Thanks for posting it!
Oh, my poor Alec. I love how you did this. Coming to the realization that he will never be anything more than one of their transgenics. I'm impressed with how you pulled that off. I especially love the idea that he has never had an orgasm before and it really freaked him out. Growing up in such a restricted environment, a lot of things must have scared the hell out of him, trained soldier or not.
Thanks! Mopey Max's and tragic Logan's aside, I always thought Alec (cute boy stuff also aside) was one of the most interesting and sad characters in either seasons. He was a lot of what I wished they'd done to Zach but never quite got there somehow...
Anyway, I wish they'd done a little less "oh noes the virus!" and a little more with the side characters. (Which they had no trouble doing in S1 it seemed like...) Yeah yeah, Alec got his own angsty episode but I am greedy and wanted more.
That was really excellent. Fantastic look inside Alec's head, a subject I don't think I've seen dealt with in a DA fic before, and beautifully written.

this was fascinating, and scary and painful. his powerlessness and confusion are palpable. you did an excellent job of writing alec's world, and of creating a back story that fits in with canon. this is the alec we first met when he had a black market thing going with the guards but didn't question orders, when he was 494. loved the closing line.
I have been indulging in your work for days now (thus avoiding my own writing), lapping up every word, and because I converted them all into pdf to take with me, I have been remiss with the commenting.
I love your style and the fact that all these fics, DA and SPN, are all glimpses into slithers of time we would never get to see in the shows. These are those mundane moments that make their memories, make them people, but aren't the big epic events of their lives. The flesh on the bones the shows reveal to us.
Anyway, I picked this story out of many excellent ones to comment on, because it really illustrates the tragedy that is the life of an X5; institutionalised and dehumanised. I love stories like that.
(I'm pretty new to SPN, and even newer to DA - I've only seen two episodes in their entirety so far (but I've managed to see most of the important bits, i.e. mostly those with Alec in!))
Wow, thank you! ♥ I'm glad you are diggin the fictional stuffs. :)
And thank you for commenting, and on this story which happens to be one of my favorites out of the bunch. XD (Sometimes I still like something even after the buzz of typing it down passes. ha!) The lame deal of being an X5 is so sad to me, and the weird character of a guy like Alec coming from a place like that kept me wondering how he went from solider to ... Alec. I'm really glad this fic conveyed all the gross-ness because was for sure the intent.
DA is a lot of fun but I have to admit, Alec aside, S1 was a lot better. XD But a very fun show with lots of surpising dark parts to it that I really liked. SPN too!
I'm still ploughing through all the stories! Your production rate leaves me gibbering and very jealous.
I'm glad I've given DA a chance, I'm hoping it'll kick start my own stalled work (I write BtVS). I'm in the middle of a story where Buffy had her memory erased by the military in order to produce a demon fighting super-soldier. There appears to be a (completely unintentional, I swear) similarity...
As Alec is the key to this series to me, I'm not sure how I'll get on with S1, Max is a little short on the charisma to me, but I'm going to give it a go.
Plough is a good word choice for this heap! XD My production rate confuses me too. I only do it (fan fic fun) for an hour or less a day, but making a goal/plan seems to help it along.
Buffy! I liked that show but I have yet to see the final season.
Actually, I went into DA with the intention of fast forwarding to all the Dean!Guy parts and not pay the interfering plot any attention. By the time I was done I wanted to see S1 and find out what it was all about. XD So ya never know? You might like it more than you think, Alecs or no!
(The magical Jackles presence did not have the same affect on the season of Smallville he was in however. I've never watched that again and I don't think I ever will. Alec is just THAT cool. :D)
