Summary: His thoughts of loving her blotched away and repainted with disgust and animosity. Jayne walks away from River.
He had his back to her, the muscles tensing as he felt her hand caressing his shoulder blades. River jerked her hand back as his thoughts flooded into her mind, and she flinched at the sudden harsh words that formed in blood.
“So much hate…” she murmured as she took a step back from Jayne. He turned slightly, catching her in his peripheral vision as he grabbed his rucksack from the floor.
“I am done tellin’ ya to stop readin’ my mind,” he groaned and turned around fully to stare down at her. His sapphire eyes were no longer bright with energy. The spark was completely gone and replaced with indifference and revulsion. His thoughts of loving her blotched away and repainted with disgust and animosity.
“Why are you-“
“Why am I what? Leavin’ my job? Leavin’ Serenity? Leavin’ ya?” Jayne laughed dryly. “Ya just don’t get it, do ya?”
“Help me understand,” she pleaded, fresh tears forming in her chocolate eyes. “Help me see what I have done wrong to Jayne to see these colors.”
“Too late fur that, crazy. Ya wanted the real me?” he asked her as he grabbed her arm in a tight grip with his free hand and shoved her to the side, sending her crashing against the hull of the ship. “Well, here is the real Jayne.”
As he walked away, River slid down to the floor, a sob escaping her lips as she wrapped her arms around herself to stop shaking. His thoughts finally gone, signaling his departure from the ship, leaving her with the memories of something that was merely a dream.
