Wash's death hit me about that hard, too. I love the idea of this sort-of penance that River is doing here, this awareness of and easement of Zoe's pain through Wash's written thoughts.

very nice! i like the interaction between river and zoe; very much in character for river to come and apologize. and to try to make up for what she believes is (at least partly) her fault.

The part of her that was still a soldier and not a widow was horrified by the sob that escaped on the last word.

i loved that you touched upon that dichotomy. she's a wife and a soldier, and where zoe is concerned, they are sometimes two very different people, which is why her relationship with wash was so interesting.

Wow-za. Not only do you have the characters' voices down pat, that is a true zinger of a concept, and one I've never seen. Excellent, excellent idea, and you make it fit perfectly without overplaying it. Seriously well done.
