That was my thought as well, when I saw that episode.

Yeah, I see I'm totally not original here, unsurprisingly.

I do see fan suggestions that maybe he had Broca region damage, so could comprehend language but not generate it. I think that could work.

I was going to say something like that had to be the explanation, some inability on Pike's part to use language.
