Okay, I'll be the first to admit it... I'm a crappy tourist. I go to Paris and I don't go in the Louvre. I go to New York and this is as close to the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island that I got:
but the line was so incredibly long that I just couldn't do it. That's also a big problem for me. I hate standing in line (for whatever reason). If I really want to see something then I try to go at a time when it is less crowded (like, early in the morning) otherwise I just pass.
Do you know what those things are behind the trees on the right side of the Statue of Liberty?
I'm not certain, but they look kind of like the cranes they use to unload containers from cargo ships, so maybe there is some sort of port behind there. (Is that New Jersey? I get kind of turned around over there.)
There is a better way to visit the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island, and that is to buy a ticket in advance for the exact day and time that you want to go. The line for people who had those tickets was tiny. They would load up the ferries with those people first, then if there was any room, they would take people with the 3-day pass (which was what I had). The next time I go I will be sure to do that. We want to see Ellis Island because my gf's family came through there from Hungary and her uncle's name is engraved on one of the walls.
Thanks for the tip! Knowing beforehand the exact day and time of the visit might be a bit difficult though but I will try to keep it in mind. Before I went to Berlin last year a friend told me of a similar arrangement for the Reichtstag but I wasn't able to find the right place online to register. But we visited in the morning and thankfully the length of the line was bearable.
