They stopped drinking when they started talking so by the time they left the bar neither of them could use the excuse of alcohol for their actions. She wasn't sure when she made the decision that she was going to sleep with him, if he'd have her, but she didn't hesitate for an instant when he suggested a hotel room.

Early in the conversation they'd realized they were both cops and then they promptly agreed to discuss anything but that. Family, books and movies, music, travel and finally relationship were all fair game but not work. The NYPD was just too incestuous. There was no way they didn't know some of the same people and then they couldn't possibly have a one night stand.

That's what they both wanted, for their own reasons. They knew right away. She was drawn by his voice and those stunning blue eyes, but she was hooked by the way he listened. He leaned in when she spoke, catching every word and inflection. It went beyond paying attention. Through the whole conversation, he never laid a hand on her. She could tell he wanted to. He watched her hands and her mouth and once when she brushed her hair back off her neck he actually moaned.

They left together. He walked a little ahead of her, parting the crowd, and they walked to a nearby hotel. It was nothing special, but the rooms would be clean. He didn't touch her until they were behind a locked door. Even then he was a gentleman, gruffly asking if he could please kiss her. She almost laughed. He looked like a child who thought he'd be denied candy.

Her answer was to drawn him into a deep kiss. It wasn't passionate. Passion for her implied a certain level of emotion that they just didn't share. It was intimate, though. And energetic. After the first kiss it only took them a few minutes to have all of their clothes off. She was proud of her body and not afraid to let him see her sprawled on the bed, legs akimbo.

He took a bit more time, partially because he was distracted and partially because he wanted to tease her. She couldn't easily see the fifteen years he had on her once he was naked. The tiny bit of silver in his blond hair was more than out shown by his well muscled legs and broad chest.

The same attention he paid her during conversation was paid her when he touched her. Fingertips, palms, lips and even his cock rubbed all over her until she writhed on the bed begging for more. His gruff voice returned when he politely asked if he could take her. They lay beside each other for a long moment while she processed his request. Having him ask despite her begging was a surprising kindness and she kissed him lightly before whispering her permission.

When they finally joined all gentleness fled. His work to excite her had clearly worked wonders on him and he lifted her hips so he could get deep inside her. He told her in graphic detail what her body did for him and to him as he pounded into her. She reached for him, finding those sensitive points that drove him to use her even harder. Finally he let out a thick howl and emptied into her, his body stiffening. After taking a moment to recover, he rolled off her and used his fingers to push her over the edge. She buried her fingers in his hair when she came and moaned his name.

After a short nap spent curled easily around each other, they got out of bed long enough to clean up a little and order up room service. They half dressed and talked again while they ate. She told him honestly that she was getting married in a few months and that she knew he was her last chance to do something so spontaneous and completely about her own drives. He talked more about his daughters and how he chose to have experiences like theirs rather than break up the family.

When they'd finished eating and began touching again, she admitted her fiancé was more friend than passionate lover and that the night spent with him made her wonder if that would change. He couldn't giver her much hope, unfortunately, given why he was there with her and not headed home. Their second joining was tender, containing wishes for each other and hopes for themselves. Still, he left her trembling in the bed when he went to get a shower.

She stayed the night in the room, sleeping easily.

Years later she was ushered into a glass walled room and stood at attention until the man behind the desk looked up at her. When she saw his face her first instinct was to smile broadly, but she kept her expression blank. This man was her new boss and greeting him with reminders of a night spend ages before was wildly inappropriate.

He stood and came around to lean on the front of his desk. He welcomed her to the squad, told her he wasn't sure he had the right partner for her yet and that she'd be floating for a bit. They talked about her record and about his hopes for her place in the squad.

Only when the business was done did he lower his head for a moment. He spoke softly to ensure no one passing the open door heard him. It wasn't his expression of sympathy at the loss of her husband that surprised her. He had her service record after all. Lowering his voice further he asked if she and her husband had managed to find their way to passion.

Her voice caught too much for her to answer. Instead she shook her head and shrugged. When she got herself back together she said that at least they'd had a few good years together. She didn't ask him outright if anything had changed for him at home, raising her eyebrow in question instead. He shrugged and picked up a photo of his daughters to show her.

Almost six months later he introduced her to her new partner, warning the man that she was sharp as a tack and would keep him on his toes. It took her partner a few more months to get up the nerve to ask about what he'd noticed right away. She smiled and shrugged. There was no good way to explain it. In the end she said simply, "We're friends."
