On words...

Language means things.

I was just reading an article on NPR about this whole Chick-Fil-A nuggets-for-brains CEO, and what that's done for the company. This isn't really about that.

This is about this quote.

"Since we made that decision there has not been any dilution whatsoever in our business, and as you can see, shareholder value has increased ( Read more... )

I am all for your definition of family values. These peoples' definition, though? It makes me angry. If they had a son or daughter come out or got pregnant/got pregnant or got caught doing drugs? Most of the time, they just do what Quinn's dad did and kick them out.

We had people leave our church over the Episcopal church's stance on allowing gay priests (despite the fact that there aren't any gay or lesbian priests or deacons in our church currently or ever). The church just voted to bless same-sex unions. There will be people leaving no matter which way the vote had fallen.

It's a divisive issue and there's no compromise because it's an either/or thing, and until we're able to convince the religious zealots that it's a civil rights issue and nothing more than that, it's never going to change.

Edited: The Episcopal church has allowed gay priests and bishops since 1972, but recently it became a huge uproar because a gay bishop in Savannah made waves, and caused several families to leave the church.

As long as we allow the right to control the message 'we're pro-family because we've named ourselves that' they have the upper hand. It's like when they name something the 'clean air act' when all it does is make more pollution. I will hand it to them, they're very good at saying one thing while meaning the exact opposite.

It's absolutely a civil rights issue, and no one should be able to say otherwise.

Marriage has always been a government contract. The church and the government have been entangled with each other for decades. The whole separation from church and state thing is out the window, and a lot of right wing conservative Christian types have the gall to say that they're being oppressed and us nasty liberals are being intolerant of their views.

Silly us.

Oh, btw...I meant to say got pregnat/got someone else pregnant in my previous comment. You replied though before I could re-edit that again.

Marriage in the U.S. has always been a government contract. It's varied over the years and in different countries what the definition is. I'm pretty sure no one expects to buy a woman from her father anymore, generally without even meeting her, in the U.S. if we want to be traditional about it.

Yeah, they are definitely not pro-family. I'm staying out of the chick-fil-a debate, because I don't like their food anyway. Besides, it's not been a secret of their anti-gay policy, and I choose not to contribute to that. Their idea of "family" and "family values" are not anything I'd want my kids to learn and live by.

Yeah, when this story first 'broke' I was all, "Wait, I didn't know this was a secret." Kind of up there with Anderson Cooper coming out.

I think it's one of those things where people are willfully ignorant of what goes on in the real world. Everyone's all up in arms about this now, but it's not a new thing. And it was never hidden.

It really wasn't a secret. I haven't gone there in years. I know other LGBTQinitials who haven't. I think this was more, "Oh, he said something out loud, now we get to protest even louder."

LOL, yeah, this song goes in and out of my head quite a bit. Also, I'm not gay, but my husband is.

With this issue, I don't think it matters whether you're gay or straight or whatever. Being a homosexual and being obese are the two things that are okay to discriminate against in this society, and that's wrong.

Personally, I'm bi, but I"m uncomfortable advertising that because of the weird prejudice surrounding that label both within and outside the LGBTQ community.

And disabilities, don't forget disabilities. Although with disabilities it's beyond accepted. It's, "Well, of course they can't do that, they're ___." It's sick.

Yeah... lots of prejudice with the 'bi' label. :( It's sad.

I think your words should become a FULL PAGE AD in the New York Times. I'd start a collection to pay for it.

Well, when I checked last night, my comment simply saying that NPR shouldn't be calling them 'pro-family' was the highest recommended on that article. I don't know if that'll give them a clue.

Yeah, just checked again, my comment is at '91' the next one down is at '56'. I'm not the only one who disagrees with this 'pro-family' BS.
