so I am reading Jo Walton's Among Others, and I keep having two thoughts:
1) I feel like I need some kind of annotation for the books mentioned
and 2) it reminds me of Pamela Dean's Tam Lin except I read that at a formative part of my life ( Read more... )

Another one who read Tam Lin at a formative moment. So good. Just re-read it not too long ago--it holds up wonderfully.

I had read about 50% of the books she mentioned, but it didn't help with my basic problem with Among Others: it felt like a conversation at a con rather than a novel. All the name-dropping and "fandom changed my life!" At the center I just didn't feel like there was enough story there.

Yeah, I said on my goodreads comment for it that I would have loved it as a short story; less so as a novel.
