Sallie comes out of the staff corridor to a side booth, conspicuously far away from the yellow crystal floating over the bar. She pops a pair of aspirin she brought out from her apartment and asks one of the waitrats to bring her one of the books from under the Tabs board.

She has work to do.

"Yes. But it was home for most of my life. I was glad, in fact, that the world managed to not end with either bang or whimper."

"But you're not even happy here."

Which...surprises Sallie to say. But she knows it is true.

"Do you want to just..."

"That, my friend, is a very good question."

He is silent as the grave for a long while.

"I'm ready to face whatever comes next. I'm not scared of it, any more than I was when I died.

"But it would be selfish of me to just go, wouldn't it?"

"But it'd be selfish for me to make you stay."

"You know something? If my time is really up, neither of us can stop it, right? Which means that if what you want to try works, my time isn't up."

"How could I say no?" Well, it would be easy to say no. To surrender to fate. But he has to admit, he wants to see Renee and Helena again, if nothing else.

And yes, he wants to be with Sallie.
