Gordon lunges through the door, crowbar in hand, and immediately trips over one of the rats. As he pushes himself to his feet and makes a muttered apology, the door vanishes behind him.

Damn it. And he was sure he'd seen that wretch in the suit on board the Borealis, too.

"I don't think you'll get that open with a crowbar," Urquhart says, grinning.

"Perhaps it's part of the doom."

Gordon glances over at the speaker and shrugs faintly. He's got something not too different from a scabbard attached to his belt; the crowbar gets slid into place there. "You haven't seen a tall, gaunt man in a gray suit come through here, have you?" he says instead. "With a briefcase?"

"No," Urquhart says. "Not that I remember."

"Good."

Well, relatively. It means Gordon's here for no reason now. And with the door gone...

"What the hell happened here, anyway?" he says as he looks around the rest of the Bar.

An inebriated man in a bowler hat watches Gordon enter the bar. He laughs hysterically at Gordon's pratfall as if it's the funniest thing that has ever happened to anyone.

"Hoo boy! You must got an awful lot of boards to pull out, mister!"

Gordon pushes himself up and eyes the stranger. "It has its uses," he says, and returns it to its place on his belt. "You haven't seen a gaunt man in a gray suit pass through just now, have you?"

"Nope," McCabe says, leaning back and swirling his drink a little. "Y'chasin' him?"

"If I see him again," Gordon says, "he'd better hope someone else catches him first."

Gordon is not one for speeches. And he will never, ever make the mistake of telling an enemy 'before I kill you, there's just one thing I want to know'. He can live with unanswered questions.

Michael's reached him by the time he's back upright. "Anything I can do?" He notices the crowbar. "Such as helping you find whomever has that coming?"

"Is he here?" Gordon says as he comes to his feet. "The greyface?"

Michael's face becomes a cold mask, with flames flickering about his eyes. "Fortunately for That Thing, I didn't see it come in. Nor am I detecting any of the other sensory impressions I got from it the one time we met in poorly-disguised-as-a-person. Sorry, Gordon; I'm sure there'll be another time.

"Unless it runs afoul of the head of security before then. I told the head of security, a while back, about it grabbing you out of here, and sending back those of us who'd come to City 17; he said he'd be watching for it. Since he's a fully accredited god, he should be able to keep up with it better than even I. He said as if modesty were only something he'd heard about."

Gordon nods. "I thought I saw him," he says. "On the ship. I was running after him, and I wound up here..." He rubs at his face. "This is exactly what he did in Black Mesa. Appear just long enough to catch my attention, then vanish. exactly."
