Happy Holidays!

With Jo freeing Sallie up from bartending, she's taking the time to enjoy the process of decorating around the bar for the holiday season. A wreath over the fireplace, cinnamon brooms in random corners, and of course appropriate amounts of mistletoe ( Read more... )

Many of the decorations are of a fashion that you don't find in 1790s England, but there's something about the trapings of Christmas that are unmistakable.

Mary Bennet is standing, arms folded tightly, frowing at the wreath as if it has personally wronged her, her entire family, and possibly England itself.

"It's October," she says (sounding highly displeased) to the bar at large.

It is. At least back home (if what everyone tells her is true). And Mary is not at all happy with the reminder that she's been stuck here for so many weeks that Christmas is in the offing.

"Baobei," Sallie chirrups, "One of the things you pick up real quick at the end of the 'verse is that it's every time, everywhere, all at once. 'Sides, who don't like Christmas?"

Mary has no idea what she's just been called. It might be an insult. It might not.

It's so hard to be sure about such things, here. It does nothing to alleviate Mary's grumpy mood.

"So I've been told," she says, mulishly.

"Why do they have Christmas here, anyway? It's not as if this is a decent, Christian place. It's some sort of unholy fairyland."

And not the sparkly, flowery kind.

Harrumph.

Sallie, who had previously been amusing herself with untangling a string of lights, gives up for the moment and moves closer to the young woman with the attitude.

"I'm as Christian as you are, young lady. And if you'd like to keep throwing insinuations about when you don't have the first inkling on who you're talking to, go right ahead."

When Tamara finally left and William feels like he has a hangover, but seeing Sallie putting up decorations makes him smile,

"It looks beautiful, ma'am."

"Thank you very much, Mister William!"

It's a little overly loud, but sincere and bright.

"How've you been, son?"

He laughs at her cheerfulness,

"Doin' alright, Mrs. Reynolds. I'm tryin' to figure out what to get my Ma for Christmas."

"Well for the love o' all that is holy, don't get her something useful.

"My husband bought me a vacuum one time. Wanted to throw it at his head."

Dixie's just a little amused by the sight of someone her (late) grandmother's age in such a...cheery disposition. "Did Bar save any for the needy?" she smiles warmly.

One inspecting eye, and: "Don't think you're used to needing for very much, my dear, but I think I could scare somethin' up."

There's still bourbon from the bourbon pecan from earlier cooking shenanigans.

She laughs. "Well, I am the sort of gal who knows how to pad her bustle."

Mmm, bourbon - it's been awhile since Dixie's had a bit of that.

"Bustles." Sallie groans a bit. "Used to be fashionable when I was a tiny thing. Don't know how you stand them at all."

Sallie's turned away from Dixie then, scrounging up another tumbler for her guest.

The holiday decorations seem a bit odd to Howard. After all, it's only October for him. And he doesn't expect it to be much of a Christmas this year anyway.

Another person randomly staring. All Sallie's trying to do is spread a little Christmas spirit!

Not spirits. Spirit. Oh my.

"Can I help you? You new?"

"Relatively. Only been stumbling into here for a couple of weeks. And it's not Christmas yet for me." No reason it shouldn't be here, though. Time doesn't matter, right?

"Well then it's a pleasure to meet you! My name's Sallie Reynolds, and I am one of the Barmen here."

Says the lady who up til a few minutes ago was untangling a string of Christmas lights shaped like sombreros.
