There's a bartender on duty tonight with epic chest hair, an even more epic crossbow (strapped to his back, not loaded, don't worry), and a rather less than epic stepstool. Not his fault the Bar is scaled for humans ( Read more... )

Tumsus frowns at the specials board, he's never been terribly good at jokes,

"I'm afraid I don't know many good jokes."

"Not a problem," says Varric, unperturbed. "I'm still serving, regardless. What'll it be?"

"Just some tea, please. Do you collect jokes?"

"They make it easier to cadge free drinks out of people in the places I frequent back home," says Varric as he sets about preparing the tea. "I have a reputation as a storyteller, and it never hurts to vary the merchandise a bit."

A human approaches the bar. Well, human if you are willing to accept red irises are human. She can be very convincing when it comes to getting people to ignore it.

"Well," she says to the bartender, "that almost certainly isn't a Black Guard standard issue crossbow. But then again, what are the chances you are one of the Black Guard? Can I get a mug of Dragon Bitter, if there is any back there?"

Mages do strange, strange things to their own appearance sometimes. Varric just lets it slide.

"Never heard of them, but this is Bianca, and she's the only one of her kind in the world," Varric says smoothly. "Give me a moment and I'll see what I can find for you. Where's that from, if you don't mind my asking?"

"Ah! I suspected my world wasn't the only world with dwarves in it. You are a dwarf, aren't you?"

"Dragon bitter originally came from the island of Crandor, if I remember correct. Luckily the hops they used to brew it made it to the mainland before the whole island caught fire. It should be slightly reddish."

A bitter brew to remind everyone of the island's bitter fate. It's almost poetic.

"I am indeed," says Varric. "Varric Tethras, younger son of House Tethras, surface dweller and merchant prince of Kirkwall at your service." He sketches a quick bow. "I believe I saw something along those lines among the ales just now. Let me go grab a tankard..."
