Jack comes in from a quick run outside, his nose and cheeks red from the cold.  The cold is the very reason that the run was a quick one; even as long as he's been in the bar, he still isn't used to colder climates.

After a quick stop in his room to change, he heads down to the bar for a drink.  However instead of a hot cup of coffee, he gets a note ( Read more... )

Sameth is limping from his adventure in Ellen's world, his leg is better, he's just been standing on it too long.

When he spots Jack he smiles, "Would a spiced wine be too complicated? If it is, could I have a hot chocolate?"

Jack shakes his head. "I think there's some already going somewhere back here."

He ladles out a glass from a pot and slides it across the bar to Sameth.

"What's with the limp?"

"I was hurt at home and it had mainly healed and then I got hurt in the same place in Ellen world. Thank you,"

He's on a stool and much happier as he reaches for the glass.

"Did you get it fixed here?" he asks.

He might not have liked his trip into the infirmary much, but it beat having a shiner and sore ribs for as long as he would have outside.

Grumpy is as grumpy does. And anyway, Ellen's been trying to get her Brahmin used to cold and nasty weather, just in case it ever happens to them somehow, so she could use a hot drink. Granted, she's wearing a heavy white military overcoat that's probably done a good job of keeping her warm so far, but still.

"Um. I think cider? I've heard people order that hot..."

"Usually, yeah, though some people drink it cold," Jack says, grabbing a mug and ladling some from a pot behind the bar.

"You look pretty warm, though," he says, nodding to the coat.

"Well, it's worth a try either way," Ellen says, "and anyway it's been wet out there, which is nasty. This coat was designed to keep out Alaskan snow, not rain, so it's not really waterproof much."

"Yeah, I'd think the padding would just soak up the water instead of repelling it," Jack says, pouring himself a cup of coffee. "How have you been?"

"I'm almost afraid to order something," Beckett pipes up, slipping into a seat down at one end of the bar.

She doesn't need to get a look at Jack's face to call his mood; the tension in his shoulders signals enough for her.

"At least if you order something simple, I can't screw it up," he says with a wry expression.

"Can you screw up a hot chocolate?" she replies, meeting his gaze and holding steady.

"It's cold enough out there to demand something warm."

"I could probably manage to not screw that up."

And in a minute, there's a hot chocolate in front of her!

"I think so far every year I forget just how cold it gets here."

Peggy is a striking woman, even here. Baseline human, yes, brown-haired and fair-skinned, yes. But everything about her - the way her hair curls, the sheer red of her lipsticks, the cut of her khaki uniform - is very, very 1940s.

(There is no insignia on her jacket, nothing that suggests rank, only a pair of pins on the lapels of her jacket.)

"So, if I ordered a hot, simple drink, would I get seventy-five percent off?" Peggy asks, amused. Her accent is; English and naturally posh.

That earns her a small, wry smile. "No, the 'hot' part is included in the second offer; it's not cumulative. Though maybe if I just gave stuff away, Bar wouldn't ask me to bartend anymore."

Pause.

"Bar...asks you?"

Help the newbie out, Jack.

"Yeah. Occasionally she wants to take a break, so she'll give someone a note saying it's their turn to bartend. You could probably try getting out of it, but that might be a bad idea."
