Things back home might count as 'quiet' if it weren't for SOF. Those members of SOF that frequented Charlie's Coffeehouse, who knew Sunshine and what she could do, could tell that the attack that had taken Paulie might have been aimed at her. They meant to keep her safe, whether she wanted them to or not. It had taken her nearly an hour (of ( Read more... )

Howard is sitting at the fireplace, thinking. Mainly about this odd place that he keeps finding at odd moments in a life that is maybe just a bit odd anyway. He notices the young woman, nods, and smiles for a moment.

Rae has inhaled half of her mug of tea, and the caffeine is starting to take effect. She feels almost normal! Sort of.

Caffeine acquired, she has taken to watching the bar room for people she knows, the tray of freshly-baked maple-syrup pound cake, triple-ginger gingerbread (with homemade icing, of course), and double-chocolate fudge brownies, at her elbow. She can't remember meeting the man in the suit over by the fireplace before, but, when he smiles at her, she offers a hesitant smile in return.

"You aren't going to eat all of those, right?" He knows there are hoarders in the UK in his time. But he figures most of them save their hoards for later consumption, same as everyone else.

"I'd be sick before I finished half of them," she says, her smile turning wry. "So I figure I'll stick to selling them, instead."

"No, it's... Yes. Dave. Stop screaming, Dave. It hasn't gone anywhere. You're not that lucky." If he sounds vaguely exasperated... that's because he is.

"Just... take a minute. Breathe. Think about breathing." Balthazar finally surrenders to the inevitable and makes his escape into Milliways.

Rae smiles into her tea, hearing the familiar voice. Without looking, she holds a plate with slices of triple-ginger gingerbread (slathered with homemade icing) and maple poundcake in Balthazar's general direction.

"Stop." He grumbles, taking the gingerbread and a seat. "Or I'll let him laught at you when we start working on personal transfiguration."

"Stop offering you baked things?" she asks, guileless. "Never. Sorry."

The tea had already begun to do its work relieving tension when Finvarra's whistled tune reaches her. She listens, eyes closed as she breathes in the fragrant steam from her mug of tea.

Eventually, a faint smile replaces the stressed look on her face. A couple of double-chocolate fudge brownies are set on a plate and offered up to the King of the Faeries.

"Yes," she replies, smiling up at him. "Thank you."

Though she hadn't known it, she had needed that.
