After that last trip up to Canterbury and back, and after Halloween finally ended, Ellen returned to the Project Purity grounds with the intention of returning the pack Brahmin. To her surprise, she ran into Paladin Tristan there- and Star Paladin Cross. They had news, and the paperwork to prove it ( Read more... )

"You know Halloween's over, right?"

Dean can't quite help giving Fawkes a kind of wary look as he elbows his way toward the bar.

"Because I know time here is kinda weird, but. Uh."

He shakes his head, still keeping one eye on the big green guy. The other eye he turns toward Ellen.

Metaphorically.

"Does a beer count as simple?"

For one, Dean hates those froufy drinks (except Purple Nurples).

For another, he's kinda light in the pocket lately. So.

"I'm well aware of that," rumbles Fawkes, who seriously sounds as if he ought to be screening calls for one of the Dukes of Hell or something. "I was shorter for the holiday."

Ellen, who is only a little more than half the mutant's height, nods. "Simple as it gets, really," she says. "Do you have a particular kind of beer you want?"

Shorter --

Dean's eyebrows go up, and he gives Fawkes a less sidelong once-over.

"How the hell does that even work?"

By which he means 'where does the mass go'?

He shakes his head, then, drumming his fingertips against the bar.

"Uh. Anything that ain't Canadian."

Just this once. Or, you know, any time he's not hanging out with one of the Fords.

"I haven't the slightest idea," says Fawkes. "I walked through the door, and found myself a... pure human."

A very strange experience.

"They make beer in Canada?" Ellen says, genuinely puzzled. She shrugs and opens the reach-in cooler. "Um. Hm. Sam Adams, Gamma Gulp, and... Strategic Nuclear Moose?.... Sam Adams okay?"

That dude behind the bar with Ellen looks ... a lot like that description Ellen gave her of her friend.

ELEMENTARY MY DEAR AVA.

"Hey!" she says, to Ellen.

"Rum and coke?"

Fawkes smiles. Well, he means to. It really doesn't look very smiley, unless you're used to seeing three quarters of a person's dental arcade at once as a friendly gesture.

Ellen's smile is a good deal more recognizable. "Sure," she says, "I can do that. I know where the rum is. Um- Coke is the one in the red can, right?"

Soda. In cans. How very, very strange.

"Sure!" Ava says pleasantly.

She is looking at Fawkes. His smile does not faze her, possibly because of all the time she spends hanging out with demons.

"... Are you Fawkes not-Guy?"

The mutant nods. "I am," he says, "although I took the name in Guy Fawkes' honor. May I ask your name?"

That time is well spent. She'll be used to the voice, too. That does not sound like someone for whom it is comfortable to talk.

William's had time to go home and he keeps running his hands through his hair when he comes in to make sure it's still short,

"Hello Ellen, that mean you don't have to do as many rides out?"

"Hi, William," Ellen says. "I'll probably still be doing escort duty, but Megaton's likely to be my permanent route now, at least for a good while. And I don't have to stay at the Citadel any more- they want a Brotherhood presence in the city, to make sure people know the Brotherhood considers them important. How have you been?"

"Not too bad. My costume kept me mainly myself. Could I get a root beer?"

"That's always good. My costume was interesting, but I think I had some extra body parts, and I"m not sure I want to know how that works," Ellen says. "One root beer coming right up. What did the Bar dress you as?"
