[OOM: Jack should know that nothing good can come of ignoring his instincts.]

The door opens, and Jack stands blinking blearily on the other side. A patron that looks over is likely to look twice, considering the state of him.

His shirt is soaked through and his wet hair is plastered against his head, but that’s likely to be the least noticeable ( Read more... )

Guppy glances up from where he's sitting. He's seen Jack around before now, in passing, but never got around to actually talking to him.

He's got a bit of a spidey sense for blood though, so as Jack passes behind him, he turns around.

"Do you want any help with that? I'm a doctor."

"Do you want me to use this on myself first to show you it's safe?"

Jack shakes his head; making Guppy demonstrate it on himself sounds like something a five-year-old would do. Besides, the rational part of his mind knows this place isn't a threat.

It's just that at the moment, his fight-or-flight response is controlled by the irrational part of his brain.

"I'd rather get this over with."

"Okay."

Guppy scans him carefully, checking for internal injuries.

[ooc: Let me know if you want it to pick anything else up :)]

[ooc: OOH. Actually, couple things I've been wanting to deal with that I had't figured out how before. One, Guppy could find an arrythmia in Jack's heart (especially as he's stressed). Been wanting to address what canon didn't. And as for injuries, other than a concussion and a couple cracked ribs, he probably won't find anything other than bruises.

Though Guppy would probably notice that Jack has a large chemical burn scar covering the back of his right hand. I don't know if his diagnostic tool would catch this, but it's a deep scar and a lot of the nerve endings in that area would have been killed off. At some point I have to have Jack approach the Milliways medical staff about getting some plastic surgery on that hand. Jack's liver and kidneys probably aren't in the greatest shape, and he has lots of scars elsewhere, but the former probably isn't to an extent that Guppy would have to treat it at the moment.]

Jack doesn't watch what Guppy's doing. Instead he's focused his eyes and everything else in him on the fish tank, trying to take deep breaths and keep himself as far from another panic attack as he can.

Guppy scans him, frowns slightly, and then reaches out to gently feel Jack's pulse.

"You have an irregular heart beat. Do you have any heart problems you know of? Have you had any chest pain?"

Jack shakes his head. "I think I've felt it skipping beats occasionally, but usually when I'm stressed and it goes away. I had a heart attack a few years ago."

Well, one time he flatlined due to being electrocuted during an interrogation and one heart attack a few hours later. And then everything the Chinese had done to him couldn't have helped in that regard.

[ooc: Sorry, there's no way to attach an ECG without exposing the chest. It's measured across the skin.
I'm heading to bed, will pick up tags tomorrow :)]

[ooc: OK, wasn't sure if he could just stick them down the neck of his shirt, in which case the scarring might not be as noticeable. In that case, you might want to retag with him asking Jack to take his shirt off, as er...Jack's going to find that very uncomfortable, and he has a *lot* of scars. Maybe one extra tag each whenever you get up, and then we can cut-and-paste a good part of what's already written.]

"Stay here, I'm going to get the ECG machine." Guppy says, getting up and going back into the infirmary.

He comes back a few moments later with a portable machine.

"I'm going to need you to take your shirt off please. Are you under a cardiologist at home?"

Jack tenses at the request, his hands curling into loose fists. The only time he's ever shown anyone his chest and back since returning from China was at CTU medical, and that one, hopefully too-brief glimpse Beckett had gotten by accident ( ... )
