Mary whirls, staggering slightly as her heel catches on the uneven ground. (Well, really, you try being graceful when terrified.) She warily regards the young man who has appeared behind her.

Mary attempts to pull herself up into a dignified posture.

"No. Most certainly not," she says.

A pair of wide eyes and a curling iron raised at ready like a sword rather belay the assertion.

Yes, yes you most certainly do, is what Mary wants to yell, and then run in the other direction.

But that would not be terribly ladylike. Plus, she's not sure she could outrun him (though she reserves the right to try in the very near future). Besides which, she is a Bennet, thank you.

For the moment, she stands her ground.

"And who is to say that I am in need of assistance?" she asks.

Fairly haughtily.

Charlie is dangling upside down from a sturdy branch. It's a method for meditating he hasn't tried lately. It's somewhat effective.

Naturally, he keeps one eye open, just in case.

Mary has taken several steps in his direction before she determines that, yes, that is indeed a man hanging upside down from a tree.

Her steps slow, and then finally stop. Mary stands, confused, not at all sure what to do.

She hates not knowing what to do.

He doesn't seem to be in distress, but, really, what is he doing?

For lack of any other ideas, Mary clears her throat, rather loudly.

"Hello." Both eyes open now. "Can I help you with something?" He tries to sound deadpan, just because that is not a bad place to start with a total stranger.

"Um. That is....no."

There are any number of things that Mary would like help with (getting back to England would be a good start) but nothing that she's inclined to ask anyone in (or out of) Milliways yet.

"Is there...I mean...do you need help with something?"

Because, really. Man. Hanging from a tree.

After finishing her morning chores, Kate took Beaut out for a ride. She's been up the meadow path towards the mountains, back through the forest and to the inlet, and is now taking her time going around the lake. Both horse and rider look tired, but happy for all that.

Kate notices Mary when she's not more than a few yards off, and gives a polite nod.

"Hello, Miss."

It is, if not normal, then perhaps the most normal sight Mary has yet seen in this place--a lady out for a ride.

Mary bobs a polite curtsy in return.

"Good day," she replies.

Kate's smile is quick and welcoming. It's been some time since she was greeted with a curtsy.

"D'you work at the forge?" she asks carefully, casting a curious glance on the tongs.

Now Mary gapes a bit.

Does she look like a blacksmith? She's female for one thing. It's likely that she hasn't made the connection between the question and Kitty's curling iron.

"No. No not at all. I don't work anywhere."

Something crosses Mary's face that might almost be wry resignation.

"I'm an abducted personage."

There is a woman - a girl really, slim and tousle-haired and clad in jeans (they're cool, and you can bedazzle them) sitting on one barstool, her feet propped up on another, as she watches the bar and whittles with her folding knife.

At least she's being polite and not laughing outright?

Mary does feel better for her walk outside, but the unnervy feeling of being downstairs in the bar has not gone away.

Especially when she's being stared at.

Mary gives the girl a sidelong look through narrowed eyes before fixing her attention firmly on the cup of tea she's gotten from Bar.

Awww, so fierce! But the girl seems to be left with tea and no cake, and this is something of a tragedy.

A short while and a conversation with a rat later, and Mary is being presented with a slice of kulich by one of the long-suffering rat waitstaff.

Mary eyes the slice suspiciously.

It's nothing personal. A good nine-tenths of Milliways still makes her suspicious.

The byplay with the girl and the rat hadn't gone unnoticed, and it is there that Mary looks for an explanation.

"What is it?"

She's not the only one out by the lake. Sonya's also out by the lake, but instead of walking, she's out for a run-or so she was, now she's right by a tree, doing some leg stretches to keep from going stiff.

The curling iron does get a look of interest. She's seen Mary carry them before on several occasions, and since she's obviously not setting her hair, then the only reason would be to see them as a sort of weapon. An interesting choice to be sure, but she gets points for creativity.
