Over at the bar, Sam turns around fast on hearing that.

"Say what?"

Ava blinks.

A lot!

"Oh my God, Sam!" she exclaims, shifting her files strategically in her arms. "It's been forever!"

"Uh-huh."

Dryly said. A beat.

"Hi Ava, long time no see, how've you been?"

Sam's giving her the sort of pointed look that indicates he's still waiting to hear an answer to his first question.

Ava had wondered if she should try to play dumb, but she likes the trying-to-make-Sam-feel-she's-sincere-with-him angle.

So instead, her smile gets a little bit forced as she heads over.

"Oh, you know!" she says. "Seeing the multiverse. Running from stuff that can eat me. Last week I narrowly avoided eating the gender-swap candy."

At a nearby table, Ben's cleaning his gun.

His hands still when the door opens; he plants an elbow on a grease-smeared rag so it doesn't blow past his shoulder.

Once the door closes, he kicks out an empty chair for Ava, should she like to sit.

"Always have liked a woman who knows how to make an entrance."

Ava's eyes widen.

And then, slowly, she grins.

"And I've always liked a good chair," she says pleasantly, sinking down to arrange her papers.

"Nice to see you, Spurs."

His lips twitch.

"Nice to see you, too, Sparklehead."

His eyes flick to the papers.

"Looks like work's keepin' you busy."

She rolls her eyes, reaching up to adjust her headband and sweep some of the hair off her face.

"I'm a busy kind of girl, buddy. All play and no work ... would ... make me a loser."

The truest, greatest work of her hear she does think of as play-- but it's not often enough that she gets to do it.

(Too late, her brain supplies the rhyme: jerk.)

"How've you been?"
