You don't make it through the Marine Corps' Scout Sniper training without a keen eye for detail, either. But

Lately Ako has begun to sing while she runs.

"~I am unruly in the stands, I am a rock on top of the sand, I~"

Both activities get put on hold at the sight of Marine and his Pokemon. Or whatever it is.

"Don't mind me, miss," Shephard says when he realizes he's being watched. "Just tryin' to keep my dog out of people's hair. You let me know if she's botherin' you."

Dog. Stripey blue hamhock with three legs and ALL THE EYES. Whatever.

"I don't think I've seen a dog that looks like that before," says Ako, "Is it all right?"

"Aw, she's fine, she just ain't an Earth dog, that's all," says Shephard. "Her whole species looks like that."

The creature starts darting around in circles, making an odd little humming sound.

"Mrs. Wilson! You be quiet right now!"

Tsu'tey had been wondering why Shephard was herding the houndeye, especially given the speed and surprising skill he displayed doing it, and followed them out to investigate; the houndeye always gets his attention.

Such a strange little creature.

Once outside the houndeye takes off like a rocket towards the lake and starts emitting an odd, low hum. Shephard just shakes his head and drags one hand over his face.

He'll notice Tsu'tey eventually. Really.

"What is she doing?" asks a faintly confused Na'vi, head cocked to one side as he watches the dog.

"Callin' for males," Shephard says. "Least that's what the folks back home who've seen 'em in the wild say it is."

This is not going to be a fun season.

William's in an odd mood and decided he wanted to get some target practice in so he's also heading to the back door just with a rifle in his arms.

He ends up just in front of Adrian and opens the door, "Somethin' wrong?"

"Yeah, I got me a wild-caught human-raised houndeye who's up'n gone into heat for the first time, and there ain't no tame males to put her to," Shephard says. "I got to figure out how I'm gon' git her dealt with without somebody gittin' hurt or her runnin' off."

"Hell, that sounds a mess. How'd you figure out she was?"

"I didn't. Couple fellers who've lived in places that had 'em wild the past twenty years did," says Shephard. "Mari'n Jimbo'd both seen it happen before. Didn't never see it happening myself, so I didn't know."
